My hair is falling out in clumps, I dyed it this morning.

I dyed my hair this morning with my usual brand, Clairol's Nice & Easy, all went as usual. No itchy scalp or swelling etc. as I stepped out of the shower I noticed that there were a few strands of hair in the bath ( it only seems significant now, I didn't think much of it then)!

I combed my hair through and the. Dried it with the hair dryer, didn't notice any hair loss then.

While I was out for lunch I was sat at the table and happened to run my hands through my hair and masses of hair came out. My daughter laughed nervously and I did it again.....more hair fell out.

Just got back home and I only have to touch my hair and strands come out, just tried to call customer services at Clairol to see if they had any advice but it's only open mon- fri.

I don't know whether to wash my hair or leave it. I have long wavy thick hair and it terrified I'll wake up tomorrow to find loads of hair on my pillow.

Has anyone else been through this? Husband is trying to get me to go to walk-in centre but I feel fine ( sick with worry about loosing hair ) but otherwise well.

I would leave it alone for now, as long as you know you followed the instructions and rinsed it thoroughly.
Ring clairol tomorrow and make sure you give them the batch number, place where you bought it etc.
Any chance it could have been a fake product - bought from a cheap shop or something? There was a huge scandal about fake (poisonous) toothpaste from a cheap shop a few years back.
I was going to do my hair this afternoon - having second thoughts now.

I know it sounds ridiculous but I can't remember where I bought it from, I usually buy a few when I see them on special offer.

I still have the box with the serial number though so I'll ring them tomorrow. I know I should keep a sense of perspective about this but my hair is my best bit and I'd be gutted if it fell out in patches.

When you say lots of hair how much are you meaning? I shed hair like mad and can run my hand through my hair and easily have 30 strands fall out sometimes more after dying it. Is there any root attached to the end of the strands or is the hair snapping mid length?
I agree with PP and wouldn't wash it, be very gentle handling it and keep an eye out for any signs of allergic reaction (think I read hair loss as an initial symptom of reaction)
Are there any local hairdressers open on a Sunday you could phone for advice? Do you know and hairdressers you could ask?

Is it snapping off...or coming out at the roots? How much is a lot? Do you have any bald patches?

Probably about 30 strands each time I touch my hair, much more than I have ever noticed before.

I'm sat here now wondering if my head feels hot or whether it's just me imagination because I'm worrying.

I won't wash it, brush it or anything else which might make it worse.

No bald patches and it looks like a a complete strand of hair rather than snapping off in the middle.

Would an antihistamine help, just incase it was the start of an allergic reaction?

Is the hair snapping mid shaft or coming out away from your scalp from the root?

A standard anti histamine probably woudnt do any harm as a precaution. I would take one in this situation just in case.

Can you plait it loosely to prevent more falling out?

I had a massive allergic reaction to Dimithicone after using head lice lotion, it could be an allergic reaction. I can't use anything thing with Dimithicone in now but its in almost all the products i used before. I would rinse your hair in clarifying shampoo and take an antihistamine

Have a look at the individual strands to see it there is a white tip where the root is.....if there is I would perhaps consider getting more concerned as that would be quite a reaction to be having. Yeah I would take an antihistamine....does clarol have a facebook page or twitter. If it isn't breaking off but coming out at the root you really need to speak to someone.

Have you got any swelling on your head or glands?

I think there are white bits on the end some of the strands.

I've just put it up loosely to stop myself touching it, I keep doing that to check it's ok and more falls out.

I've had an antihistamine.

I feel ok, no swelling that I can see. My head might be hot or itchy but to be honest I'm not sure that I'm not just convincing myself because I'm worried.

Yes definately more worrying if the hair is falling out from the root. I may be inclined to call OOH to discuss if thats the case.

If its hair breakage - then wait to speak to Clairol.

If its from the root - are you sure this is the first time today? Have you ever noticed hair loss before?

I am not belittling the distress of hair loss - mine falls out due to anaemia I cannot get ontop of.

If its falling out from the root - not playing/washing/brushing your hair will not make any difference. If its going to come away it will.

If your head feels hot I think I would try washing my hair again and spending ages rinsing it. Can you get DH or someone to help rinse it.

Get medical help. You have clearly had some sort of reaction. Do not mess about with your health.

Oh god that sounds awful. I would get back in the shower and rinse it as cool as you can handle for ages.

When i had a reaction to Dmithicone my head got very hot and itchy, i thought i had mumps and didn't connect the lotion to what was happening for 24 hrs, I then googled and found info on Dimithicone, its a silicone which is hard to remove. Check the box and see if it contains dimithicone. Its hard to say but it sounds like a reaction of some sort, mine gradually got worse over 24 hrs until i realised what was happening and took antihistamines and rinsed my hair thoroughly. Did you use the conditioner, its probably in there as it is used as a serum to smooth the hair in many cosmetics, in head lice lotion it is used in high quantities to suffocate the head lice. Have a google maybe someone else has had this reaction

I've just thought I used John Freidas Frizzease after I rinsed out the conditioner, maybe it was just too much product all at the same time? That also might have Dimithicone in it. I'll check the labels.

Dimethicone. Dimethicone is a synthetic polymer and a form of silicone with two methyl groups attached (hence the name Di-methicone). It is usually used as a surface sealant in skin and hair products to coat surfaces in order to seal in moisture and act as a smoothing, texturizing additive.

Its safety has been called into question, as there are reports of people who react to this silicone derivative, which can cause irritation to the skin and scalp, resulting in chapped skin, rashes, burning, and itching.

Some people also report cystic acne, as dimethicone tends to clog pores and seal in oils and bacteria. It does not allow our skin and scalp to breathe, resulting in increased acne and irritation to the hair follicles, which can initiate hair shedding.

Questions still remain if in fact dimethicone can cause mutations and tumors in the skin and internal organs such as the liver and lymph nodes. To date, a causative relationship to its topical use has not been shown. But look for makeup, skin creams, and hair shampoos and conditioners that do not contain dimethicone.

My reaction to Dimithicone was sever, if the products you have been using contain it make sure you get it off you as soon as you can, this is how my reaction got so bad because i waited. My face was full of water pockets and my head like a football and my eyes swollen shut. My neck was swollen which is why i initially thought i had mumps. I used a product containing very high quantaties, i don't think the products you are using will have such a high content.

You should be fine as long as you rinse it off thoroughly and take some tablets, my guess is frizz ease will contain it

Going to wish it now and rinse for as long as I can stand .

Hopefully that will prevent or at least slow down any more shredding of strands.
