Taking the pill with family history of blood clots

I've been on the pill now for nearly 10 years, with the odd break every now and then. I have always been fine with it and have never had any problems.

About three years ago my dad had a blood clot on his leg (can't remember the medical term) which was treated and I've never really thought much about that.

Last week however he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with another blood clot only this time in his lung. He has been put on blood thinners.

This might be a stupid question, but this has just occurred to me - can I still take the pill? Whenever I go to the family planning clinic they only ask about history of blood clots in close female relatives e.g mum, sisters and they never ask about male relatives. I'm not sure if the gender makes a difference though? Confused

To be honest I'm not sure but didn't want to read and run
My sister had a blood clot with her third child and had blood thiners.
During my pregnancy I had two blood clots (DVT) and had to have anti clotting injections. Since then my dad has had a stoke due to blood clot so they do run in our family though my dads side so the only pill i can now take is the mini one.
But just to be on the safe side maybe arrange a appt at doctors to discuss it in more detail.

I have a history of stroke and heart disease in my family, so the doctor tested my blood before prescribing the pill. I am factor 5 and protein S deficient which means my blood clots too easily. I can only take progesterone contraception, so depo, implant or mini pill. I'm getting a copper cool fitted next month.

Cool!

My Ddad also had a couple of blood clots so my blood was tested before I was given the pill.

Did you dad have an identifiable reason for getting the clots OP? Like recent surgery, long haul flight or being immobilised for some reason?

If there was a "trigger" like that for him then you should be fine to continue on the pill but if there wasn't then as PPs have said you may need testing for a familial clotting issue.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 12/04/2015 20:57

Nope, no identifiable trigger.

How do you get tested? Is it just a blood test?

I hope I can stay on the pill. I'm not actually having sex at the moment but use the pill to control my periods. Don't think there's any other contraceptive method that gives you that control. Plus I hated the implant when I tried it.

I have issues with blood clots when pregnant and I am on the pill, I am allowed to take cerazette.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 12/04/2015 21:29

Does cerazette have the same hormone as the implant?
