Smear test - how long postpartum do you need to wait? Also does BF'ing have any impact?

As the title says.

I will ring the surgery and ask but they are usually so harassed and take so bloody long to answer the phone

I'm 10 weeks PP and was due a smear in Dec. I am EBF so have no cycle at the moment.

All my previous smears have been normal.

I was told 12 weeks but tbh I'd leave it a bit longer as when I went for mine they couldn't get a result and I had to repeat the entire lovely smear experience a couple of months later.

I used to analyse smears as part of my job. 3 months is ideal but if you are breast feeding it will alter your cervix. It is best if you wait until after you are breastfeeding but if this will be a while, don't delay it.

I have no idea how long I'll be feeding for but baby is only 10 weeks. Ideally I will be bf'ing for as long as I can?

I'd leave it 3 months post delivery and rather than wait. Just ask them to put in the clinical details that you are breastfeeding it makes your smear look like that of a 60 year old

Ilikesweetpeas · 02/04/2015 20:49

I had one 6 weeks post c section. Ouch!! When I had my next one 3 years later the nurse was horrified and said I should have been told to wait 3 months after birth

Sidge · 02/04/2015 21:16

12 weeks is the minimum, ideally.

There is a box to tick if you're breastfeeding so if the nurse doesn't ask then mention it.

ColdCottage · 03/04/2015 08:20

No one has mentioned this to me and DS is 11 months. Do I need to get one booked in quickly

NerrSnerr · 03/04/2015 08:22

Cold- are you due a smear? You don't need an additional one after having a baby, just your usual 3 yearly test.

AuntieDee · 03/04/2015 12:15

nerrSnerr

In the OP it says that she was due in December

NerrSnerr · 03/04/2015 12:40

Auntie- my response was for ColdCottage.

AuntieDee · 03/04/2015 13:00

Ahhhh. Silly me!

ColdCottage · 03/04/2015 16:34

Yes, I was due one when I was pregnant but I forgot until now.

bubbles08 · 17/04/2015 13:50

I went to have a smear test this morning and the nurse said I had to wait until iv finished breastfeeding due to it giving a false result, baby's 5 months.....

Pegglebot · 17/04/2015 15:30

That's weird my doc said it was fine as long as more than 12 weeks postpartum. I'm already overdue for a smear but should I really wait til I finishing breastfeeding? Baby is only 11 weeks and I'm hoping to bf for a year or so.
