I had a whole load of blood tests this morning including a thyroid function test. Most of the tests are routinely done for me every 6 months because of family history/previous blood pressure issues. The doctors surgery called me this afternoon to say could I go in tomorrow morning to see the Dr because my they pod function very low. Am now panicking that there is something else wrong from the other tests even though she said they are normal! Shahs old me I am being ridiculous and that if she said the other tests are normal she canno be lying. Think I have lost the plot a bit as very tired and sleep deprived frommy third baby.

Hi do you mean thyroid test was low?

They'll probably want to talk you through it all and explain things. It can take a while to get the meds right.

There's a good book on Amazon by the BMA by Dr toft on thyroid disease. It's worth getting to help understand lots of different things thyroid related.

I'm sure it's fine, it's just not a quick fix thing.

Ps low thyroid makes you exhausted and unable to think straight - I also get very anxious as I know I'm not right - so might not be just baby!

Thanks. Yes I am feeling anxious and not able to think straight! DH keeps telling me to relax. Receptionist said my TSH was 8.5 (not sure what my T4 is). Appointment is tomorrow so we will see. Thank you for replying.

How was appointment?

You fall into the grey area of hypo treatment unfortunately with Tsh 8.5. I think you are within your rights to request a trial of t4, it's in nice guidelines.

Clarella · 19/03/2015 21:03

Plus could be post partum related - so may not treat - it's a tricky area. Have they tested antibodies?

Girlsville · 20/03/2015 07:39

Thanks Clarella. In fact my T4 was 8, (my TSH was very high around 40) and so I have been started on thyroxine immediately. Still waiting for my fbc, but all other blood test results were fine and the Dr said these thyroid readings would explain why I have been feelingso tired.

Oh that's brilliant :)

Managing hypothyroidism can be tricky though. A good gp should ask how you feel at certain levels - if your Tsh is 2 (which gp may say is fine) you actually may not feel great, and it is completely ok to ask to try to get it lower. I notice the difference between 0.5 and 2. Sometimes alternate day doses help to get to this, though it really does take a long time to feel fully better, so try to be patient.

Tmi sorry, but for me constipation is the clue that I'm not in quite enough, too loose if on too much.

It affects muscle strength too so I've found a regular yoga class helps me to notice changes as well as building muscle (swimming good too) but it'll be a while before you feel up to things like that.
