Speculum pinching cervix - is it just me?

Never had any issues with any kind of gynae exam until this year. I had a coil removed, and when the GP removed the speculum he closed it then pulled it out and it really hurt, felt like he was yanking on my cervix.

I had to see a gynae for a follow-up, who did the exact same thing. This time it felt like when you snap a rubber band - I felt it pull and then release.

I just had a colposcopy today, and again the doctor shut the speculum then started to pull it out and it really really hurt, I let her know and she just said "relax" and pulled hard, and I felt it 'let go'.

Has the NHS changed their speculum design since two years ago (my last smear test when I had no problem at all)?

Is it appropriate to ask the doctor to NOT close the speculum on my poor bashed-about cervix, but to pull it out slightly first?

Or does everyone else get this but just not ever talk about it?

I couldn't describe it in quite the way you have but I always find speculum tests really really painful. OK it only lasts a few seconds but it's horrible. I had an injection for a filling and a smear test on the same day last year and the dentist was nothing compared to the smear Sad

I don't know what can be done about it or what actually it is. But yes, someone needs to design something that is adapted to my body.

Maybe I've got a long cervix or something! I'll ask them to check next time someone's poking around up there.
