Pg test after mc...advice needed

edie123 · 25/10/2006 17:01

Got two positive pg tests but really don't know if it is due to my mc (d&c 5 weeks ago but baby actually died 7 weeks before that) or a new pg? (We have been trying). It's doing my head in, going to ask doc tomorrow for blood test but does anyone know anything about this?

i#d be very surprised if there were still pg hormones in your blood fro,m the last pg

if you can't wait til tomorrow, could you call your local epu and ask them?

Tutter · 25/10/2006 17:04

iirc i was told that it would only take 10 days for the betahcg to be back to zero after my mcs

mrsmaddyd · 25/10/2006 17:05

My test after d&c was neg straight away, i was two days in hosp so baiscally over 48 hrs later

Twopinkoneblue · 25/10/2006 17:07

I'm sure you're levels of hormones from you're last pregnancy should have gone by now.
Sounds like it could be a new one. Good Luck!

Good idea Tutter, now looking for number, left message for GP who will call in the morning.

I think it depends on how many weeks you were when your last pregnancy ended (as opposed to when the foetus stopped growing). HCG levels reach a peak at around 12 weeks and then begin to fall. I can't remember exactly how quickly this happens, but it's something like they halve every 36 hours (or it could be 48). I got this info from Professor Lesley Reagan's book "Miscarriage, what every woman should know", so I think it's probably pretty reliable. So if your previous pregnancy ended at around 6 or 7 weeks then you should not have any residule HCG in your blood, but if it ended around 12 weeks then you might just have enough to show up. I had a medically managed miscarriage at nearly 12 weeks and came up positive on a pregnancy test four weeks after that. By five weeks on, the test was negative. (I tested a bit obsessively because I wanted to make sure that I could trust a positive pregnancy test.)

It sounds like asking the doctor to a blood test might be the best way of getting more certainty about your results. I've read of lots of people on MN who became pregant immediately after having a miscarriage so anything is possible. Good luck with it all and I really hope that it all works out for you.

Thanks Neolara

Baby died at 5 weeks but we didn't find out until 10 weeks scan. Had the op 5 weeks ago now. Yes I have a book written by a doctor that says about 3 weeks after d and c hormones should be nil. But looking on here that isn't the case for everybody.

can't help on hormones knowledge edie, but i fell pregnant with dd2 straight after a missed m/c at 11wks, with no af in between.

hope things work out well for you

edie123 · 28/10/2006 16:05

How did you know it was a new pg Tickle?

OP posts:
Tickle · 28/10/2006 22:30

sorry i took so long to reply edie..

TBH I never doubted the new test. The m/c was natural (at 12 wks, baby stopped developing at 7wks apparently), and we went on a (planned) weekend away soon after. we weren't really trying, but it was nice to be away just with dh after the m/c. i didn't test for a little while after that (only when no af arrived).

So I can't help much on the reassurance, except that my gut instinct tells me the hormones from your m/c'd pregnancy should be gone by now.

Fingers and toes crossed for you at the docs
xx

how you feeling edie?

edie123 · 30/10/2006 08:12

Not too bad Tickle.

Did another test Sat night which was BFN so don't know why the other two were BFP??!! Still no AF although 6 weeks isn't a long time I guess, think they advise that AF should show anytime between 4 and 8 weeks after DandC. Going to GP for half nine so will let you know!..

Had a blood test so just have to wait and see. Still no AF.

Checked up yesterday on one of the other threads, so thinking of you! Hope you're feeling ok... the waiting is horrible isn't it.

edie123 · 01/11/2006 10:00
