Maternity exemption certificate- free dental care?

My certificate runs out next week and I have only just got around to having a check up today. When I went to desk I was then charged the £55 (had X-rays) even though I had a valid card, she said that it was at the dentists discretion, is this right? I paid as I'm too timid to press anyone but am worried as I'm finding money very tightat the moment (can't earn enough to cover the childcare) and could really of done without this cost, granted I shouldn't have gone as I couldn't afford it but wanted to a check up as haven't seen them for 18months and genuinely thought it was free. When I look online it just says free dental care, can I query it or do I have to suck it up? They've booked me in to have a small cavity filled (in three weeks after certificate runs out anyway) but as its £85, at the moment I'll have to cancel it.

That was meant to put as not earning enough to cover childcare so am sahm for now and we're just getting by.
