Methotrexate and hair loss

I've been on methotrexate for 6 weeks now and have noticed consistent hair loss over the last few weeks .

I have very fine hair as it is so it's really getting me down.

Has anyone else experienced this on methotrexate ? I was just wondering if it usually stops after a while or just keeps falling out.

I don't want to be bald before I'm 30 Confused

Hi, sorry to hear you are also experiencing this. Are you on methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis or something else? I have RA and and my hair thinned out a lot and then settled down BUT like you I also have very fine hair to start with and I sometimes feel self conscious that it is now so fine that you can see my scalp/my parting looks extra wide etc. I have to say it hasn't got progressively worse, but definitely not better. I have been on methotrexate on and off (for pregnancy) for about 15 years now. As it is all so recent for you, if it continues I would speak to your consultant and see what they have to say.

I had methotrexate to deal with an ectopic pregnancy, so it was a one off (well, two doses) so I'm probably not best placed to advise. Having said that, my hair did fall out and thin. It came out much much more easily for about a month afterwards - on to the pillow, in the shower and withhairbrush - than normal for me and my hair felt thinner

Thanks for your replies.

Yep mine is for RA too . Ive also gone back onto the pill which has made me so moody everything seems worse than it is.

That's good to hear that it did stop eventually. I feel so self conscious at the moment thought to be honest it's probably only me who notices.

I'm going to see my consultant in a couple of weeks so I will ask him what options I have.

Pands how has your RA been on methotrexate? I definitely notice a difference already but feel wiped out a lot of the time.

Hi Nocturne, well methotrexate worked very well initially (15 yrs ago) but not so well after I had my children. For the last 7 years I have also been on Humira and methotrexate and although relatively well managed most of the time I struggle sometimes. Yes to the methotrexate exhaustion and I also feel hungover some weeks the day or two after my metho. Seems to vary but I don't know why!
