Methotrexate - Please talk to me if you had bad experiences?

(adult) DD is on methotrexate for a chronic condition. It seemed okay initially, but I think her body is now rejecting it.

If you were put on it and your body couldn't take it, what reaction did your body have? And how long were you on it before it became apparent you were allergic to it?

Thanks in advance. Thanks

I've just started on it yesterday. They are already seeing liver problems. Not great. What is she getting it for?

IgnotumPerIgnotius · 21/02/2015 18:07

Anaff That quickly? I know one of the common problems is liver damage but I had no idea it could happen so fast.

DD has been in it for 5 months. They check her blood every few weeks to check her liver.

Of course it could be any of the many drugs or because of the volume or combination of all the things that I suddenly need. Sad
Hope she gets sorted. I am in hospital and they are amazing and trying their best to sort me.

I hope they help you soon Anaff Thanks

Similar here in that it could be an infection or the ones causing the rash, but I really feel it's the Meth.

I am it for sarcoidosis. I feel like I have the flu for about 48 hours after I take it, then not too bad. It does take me forever to heal from cuts and bruises. I get blood work done every month to check my liver functions.

IgnotumPerIgnotius · 21/02/2015 21:21

How long have you been on it Beachy?

DD is all of a sudden getting flu like symptoms most days, she only takes it once a week.

I was on it for 10 years and apart from about 3 months when I started losing my hair really badly I thought I was handling it well. I then stopped it and was amazed at how well I felt - I think the general unwellness and exhaustion had crept up on me and nobody linked it to the MTX. Has your daughter spoken to her consultant? Maybe they could adjust her dose or monitor her blood more frequently. I hope she gets it sorted.

BeachyKeen · 21/02/2015 21:55

I have been on it for about a year bow, I take 7 pills once a week

EdSheeran · 21/02/2015 23:05

It could be her condition that's making her feel so unwell?

EdSheeran · 21/02/2015 23:07

Also, is quite likely that she has picked up an infection, it's the season and her immune system will be slightly compromised.

IgnotumPerIgnotius · 22/02/2015 09:59

Ed yes it's entirely possible. It's hard to tell as so many of the symptoms are so similar.

I suspect it's not an allergic reaction, as such, because surely she'd have classic allergy symptoms; elevated liver results, rash, swollen lips/face and vomiting etc?

Is she taking folic acid?

IgnotumPerIgnotius · 22/02/2015 12:55

Yes she's taking folic acid with it.

She's not got swollen lips and don't think liver results are elevated. Will ask about most recent blood results. Has the rest though. Sad
