Hi

She breastfef with two solid meals a day 5.5mths old.

Her poo's are hard little balls most of the time and she cries when pooing and strains quite alot.

She has been crying in the night, sounds like she is in pain. Rules out hunger, wet nappies etc, gp checked her chest, throat and ears so the only thing we can think of is constipation.

i have been presc Lactulose Solution. is this similar to lactose that children can have allergic reaction to in milk?

My 1st dd had allerg ic reaction to milk at five months so I did not want to give my 2nd dd formula milk until at least 6 mths.

Anyone else use this with breastfed babies?

Is it ok?

It's not milk, it's a laxative

SoupDragon · 23/10/2006 19:04

Actually, having Googled it says "use with caution with intolerance to lactose"

SoupDragon · 23/10/2006 19:05

here. There's a section that says "use with caution..."

yes i know that - just wondered if the ingrediant lactulose is similar to lactose in milk?

just worring about reactions.

need to give it now- not sure what to do?

Did your GP knew about the potential allergy before prescribing it?

funnypeculiar · 23/10/2006 19:17

We were prescribed it with dd - THINK it is a milk protein ... think someone on here told me that ...

Mum2FunkyDude · 23/10/2006 19:24

Just be warned that it works in the way that it absorbs fluid from the gut to make the poo softer to expel, it can cause cramping, so she might have some discomfort.

Mum2FunkyDude · 23/10/2006 19:26

here some more info it says use with caustion if intolerant to lactose!

SoupDragon · 23/10/2006 19:47

That's the same link I posted

Just thinking - have you thought of reverting to esclusively breastfeeding her for a couple of days? Tiktok often says that exclusively breastfed babies aren't constipated.

divastrop · 23/10/2006 20:46

it causes wind and cramping in me been taking it for pg constipation for 3 months and it does work but i wouldnt want to give it to a baby personally.
have you tried baby massage?my ds2 used to suffer from bad constipation but i learnt the tummy massage strokes and he used to 'produce' half an hour after every massage without fail.

Thanks!

Decided to not use it!

I think just giving breast milk for a day is a good idea...

Thank you for all your advice
