Woke up yesterday morning slurring - should I be worried?

My tongue looks 'off centre', which I presume means it's swollen on one side? My arm on the side it's swollen was killing me as well. I'm also having trouble typing this, even though I'm usually pretty quick normally at touch typing, I keep getting the letters wrong.

I have ongoing problems with my arm which I thought was either because of RSI from working on the computer coupled with holding hands with 5 YO DD because as we walk to school and she'd been maybe pulling on it as she dancing/skipped along.

Yesterday I thought I'd maybe laid on my front when I was in bed and it had trapped a nerve in my neck/shoulder or something, but would this affect my tongue?

I've Googled what it could be and can't find anything, tongue not numb and doesn't hurt, I can eat OK, I can get the words out OK just sound slurred.

I'd be really grateful if anyone's got any ideas about what it could be? Otherwise it'll have to wait until Monday till I can get to the doctors and I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I don't have to talk to anyone before then because I really sound as though I've had at least two bottles of wine!

Hope you're OK. My migraines do this to me but if it's new to you then you do need to rule stroke out

Wishing you well

I'm sure she will come back all in good time...if she wants to.

AgentZigzag · 17/02/2015 21:12

Oh, thank you so, so much for all the lovely messages Thanks you're all so bloody lovely Smile

I'm still alive just got out of hospital at 5 today.

Thank you for kicking me into going and getting it sorted too, I honestly didn't think there was anything seriously wrong!

I told my mum after my last message and she drove me straight over to A and E and they got me in really quickly and treated me as if I'd had a stroke, especially because my blood pressure was sky high.

Had a CT scan and X ray which didn't show anything up, then had a MRI scan on Sunday which ruled out all the serious shit out, although at first they thought I'd had a series of small strokes, but when all the doctors/consultant or whoever got together to have a look they thought maybe I hadn't.

So it is still just my tongue (and I still can't type properly like I usually can which is frustrating), which isn't swollen, one side of it has stopped working and they can't work out why.

I had another CT scan with some dye today to rule out an aneurism (?) and there was some weaknesses in the blood vessels (?) but not in an area which would affect my tongue.

So the consultant is referring me on to a neurologist and neurosurgeon (same thing? not sure) to see what they make of it. They've sent me home with Amlodipine, Clopidogrel and Simvastatin, not even sure what they are tbh, one for blood pressure, for high cholesterol and a blood thinner at a guess, going to have to give Dr Google a good bashing.

Even though it was incredibly frustrating being in hospital (bright lights, boiling hot, couldn't get the telly/internet to work, trapped in Room 101) the nurses and doctors are fucking amazing and I have so much respect for each and every one of them. They have the patience of saints and are so caring in such difficult situations, especially where I was on the stroke unit, lots of really ill people Sad I know I'm the lucky one to be at home with my girls now after the amazing care I've had Thanks

The NHS is an awesome collection of people! I really can't thank them (and those on MN who work in it) enough.

What has your blood pressure read? Glad you're alive :).

PacificDogwood · 17/02/2015 21:15

Woohoo, she is alive, alive-o!! Smile

I shall now read your post, AgentZ

fiverabbits · 17/02/2015 21:18

amlodipine is for blood pressure

simvastatin is for cholesterol make sure you take in the evening

don't know about clopidogrel

pepperrabbit · 17/02/2015 21:18

Phew that you're ok and back home!
How frightening.

PacificDogwood · 17/02/2015 21:19

Oh, wow, I am so, so glad you went in.
Sounds like you had a full set of tests and even though you've not really got a diagnosis yet, having your Bp treated is A V Good Thing.

Yy to Amlodipine = blood pressure lowerer, Simvastatin = lowers cholesterol, Clopidogrel = thins blood by making your platelets less 'sticky'.

A neurologist is a medical doctor who has specialist in things relating to the brain and nerves; a neurosurgeon is a surgeon who has specialised etc etc - you get the picture.

You must be knackered.
Hope you enjoy sleeping in your own bed tonight.
Thanks

PacificDogwood · 17/02/2015 21:19

Oh thank goodness, so pleased that you are ok.
Dh had a stroke last year and it was his voice on the phone (he was 200 miles away) which alerted me to it. I was so worried that you hadn't gone to A&E.
He is on Clopidogrel (described to me as like aspirin) and Simvastin now, he is doing really well, back at work etc. His was a stroke though.
And I agree the stroke ward was amazing, just fantastic.
So pleased that you are ok and hope they can find out what is up Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

CatThiefKeith · 17/02/2015 21:32
