Woke up yesterday morning slurring - should I be worried?

My tongue looks 'off centre', which I presume means it's swollen on one side? My arm on the side it's swollen was killing me as well. I'm also having trouble typing this, even though I'm usually pretty quick normally at touch typing, I keep getting the letters wrong.

I have ongoing problems with my arm which I thought was either because of RSI from working on the computer coupled with holding hands with 5 YO DD because as we walk to school and she'd been maybe pulling on it as she dancing/skipped along.

Yesterday I thought I'd maybe laid on my front when I was in bed and it had trapped a nerve in my neck/shoulder or something, but would this affect my tongue?

I've Googled what it could be and can't find anything, tongue not numb and doesn't hurt, I can eat OK, I can get the words out OK just sound slurred.

I'd be really grateful if anyone's got any ideas about what it could be? Otherwise it'll have to wait until Monday till I can get to the doctors and I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I don't have to talk to anyone before then because I really sound as though I've had at least two bottles of wine!

CoffeeBeanie absolutely! I did actually have a pulmonary embolism and very unwell.

And I do agree with Agent that when the chips are down the NHS/A&E can be bloody marvellous.

The hospital does send a copy if the discharge notes to your GP, but pp is right to say it's worth contacting them yourself for an appointment anyway to discuss the whole 'going forward' stuff, especially with the meds, sick notes, etc.

Thumbwitch · 17/02/2015 22:20

Hurrah and oh thank God! Was really getting worried, despite my gut feeling that you were in hospital and had no wifi.

Mildly concerning that they couldn't find a cause though, hope they sort that out with all the consultant investigations! And at least you're on their radar now, and taking drugs for various things that obviously need it.

Thanks and Wine - welcome back! Grin

Lottiegal · 17/02/2015 22:48

Just read this message as I had a similar thing happen with my tongue a few weeks ago, I started lisping though. I've just been diagnosed with Hypermobility Syndrome . It's when the cartilage is too flexible in your body. Might be something to bear in mind if they can't find out what's wrongWink glad it wasn't a stroke x

So glad to hear you are home. Great to hear it's not a stroke but I hope you have some clarity soon as to what is going on and can get on the road to total recovery soon.

Can I ask how exactly your typing has been affected?

Agree about the NHS - great bunch altogether Smile

Hope they can get to the bottom of things quickly now.

AgentZigzag · 17/02/2015 23:39

Thank you again for your messages, you lovely vipers you Smile

I've had a look at my discharge summary, primary diagnosis is 'right hypoglossal weakness under investigation' and the clinical summary says 'Admitted with woke up slurred speech, right sided tongue deviation and right shoulder pain. No other symptoms at all. Initial examination shows right sided tongue deviation with jerks were brisk bilaterally'.

Also referred me to a vascular surgeon, which I'd forgotten about, they found I'd got a quiet heart murmur, which I haven't got a clue what that is or how it could affect anything, another one for Google.

My typing is weird, I can usually type at 60 wpm, but it's really stilted atm, especially with my right hand. I'm having trouble thinking where the keys are whereas they'd normally just flow. It's a bit of a bugger because my work depends on it, but I've contacted them and they're fine thankfully, I'm hoping that if I keep typing it'll just get back up to speed.

I'm worried about going out with 5 YO DD2 and someone thinking I'm pissed in charge of her! (I'll keep my eye out on AIBU Grin) I've got no idea what to say if anyone asks me, I can't even say it's a neurological problem cos I can't get the word out! I can manage 'mind your own fucking business' though

I have always thought the NHS was amazing anyway, and I know if things don't go as they should people should definitely speak up, but seeing all the processes that go on day in day out to keep things running shows what an phenomenal feat of cooperation it all is.
