Woke up yesterday morning slurring - should I be worried?

My tongue looks 'off centre', which I presume means it's swollen on one side? My arm on the side it's swollen was killing me as well. I'm also having trouble typing this, even though I'm usually pretty quick normally at touch typing, I keep getting the letters wrong.

I have ongoing problems with my arm which I thought was either because of RSI from working on the computer coupled with holding hands with 5 YO DD because as we walk to school and she'd been maybe pulling on it as she dancing/skipped along.

Yesterday I thought I'd maybe laid on my front when I was in bed and it had trapped a nerve in my neck/shoulder or something, but would this affect my tongue?

I've Googled what it could be and can't find anything, tongue not numb and doesn't hurt, I can eat OK, I can get the words out OK just sound slurred.

I'd be really grateful if anyone's got any ideas about what it could be? Otherwise it'll have to wait until Monday till I can get to the doctors and I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I don't have to talk to anyone before then because I really sound as though I've had at least two bottles of wine!

You need to go to A&E now. Slurring and difficulty moving your arm can be sign of a stroke or a TIA (early warning of a strike) troble typing

See advice www.webmd.boots.com/stroke/guide/tia-transient-ischaemic-attack-mini-stroke here]].

Go now.

penny13610 · 14/02/2015 11:42

call 111 expect them to refer you to 999, although you may have slept weirdly and trapped a nerve or something it may also be a stroke (you can have little strokes) and is best checked out

Elllimam · 14/02/2015 11:44

You need medical attention now. What everyone else said. Hope you are ok xxx

PacificDogwood · 14/02/2015 11:49

A+E now.

Act FAST - you must go and have a stroke or CVA ruled out.

Go now.
Good luck.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 14/02/2015 11:50

Sounds stroke related to me. Please call 999

AgentZigzag · 14/02/2015 11:51

That was the first thing I looked at yesterday, but it didn't seem to fit with what they were saying were the symptoms.

Also a bit reluctant to ring 111 cos I sound so pissed, and if they ask me to go anywhere to get checked out I don't drive and would have to ask my Mum to get me to wherever, and she's already looking after my 2 DDs.

Would something like that make your tongue off centre?

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 14/02/2015 11:52

Yes.

Go to A+E.
Call 999 or get somebody to take you.

Don't bother with 111 - they will tell you the same and it will just take longer.

TongueBiter · 14/02/2015 11:52

Just go!

AgentZigzag · 14/02/2015 11:53

Oh blimey, really?

I've already left it a day, was looking after 5 YO DD yesterday with no probs as such.

I daren't ring 111.

BMO · 14/02/2015 11:53

Why wouldn't you want to be on the safe side with something like a stroke? Even if it is unlikely, I don't understand the "it might be a bit of a hassle" attitude Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2015 11:54

Please just go. This is why we have doctors, to do the diagnosing.

CurlyWurlyCake · 14/02/2015 11:54

I haven't read past your first line.

Please dial 999 the paramedics have drugs that will help before you arrive at hospital.

PacificDogwood · 14/02/2015 11:54

I am about to call 999 for you

Get thee off MN and to hospital ffs!

AgentZigzag · 14/02/2015 11:55

I can't get to an A and E as I don't drive, nearest one is at least half an hour away.

I'm going to have to tell my mum aren't I?

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/02/2015 11:56

Agree with the others, do not try to second-guess what this could be. Do not put off getting checked out until a more 'convenient' time. Do not try to get yourself to A&E.

Call 999 now. They will not think you are over-reacting, I promise.

Good luck.

Schoolaroundthecorner · 14/02/2015 11:56

Don't take chances with something like this, GO!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2015 11:56

Fortunately the ambulance drivers will do the driving for you, even in these times of hard cut backs.

PacificDogwood · 14/02/2015 11:57

Call 999
This is what they are for.

Time is of the essence even if you are well past the 'golden hour'.
Call now.

monkeysaymoo · 14/02/2015 11:57

just go to a & e. Why take the risk?!

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/02/2015 11:57

Cross-posted. You need an emergency ambulance. This is what they are for. Ring now.

Boleh · 14/02/2015 11:57

Yes, if that's the fastest way to get to A&E GO NOW

PacificDogwood · 14/02/2015 11:58

Have you dialled yet?
Hope you are on the phone to ambulance control as we speak.

PurpleWithRed · 14/02/2015 12:01

Call 999. If they don't think you need an ambulance they won't send one. But mention slurred speech and sensations/loss of motor control and I strongly suspect they'll be round fairly soon.

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/02/2015 12:01

Please, OP, don't dick around on the internet any longer asking randoms what they think, even though am pretty sure several of us are healthcare professionals.

None of us are going to say what you want to hear. What we are all saying is CALL 999. NOW.

seaoflove · 14/02/2015 12:03

Don't mess around with stroke symptoms.

If it IS a stroke, the longer the delay in getting treatment, the lesser the chances of recovering fully.

It's THAT serious.
