Back pain & IBS

I'm having a tough time with my alimentary tract. You name it, I've got it. Had tests and investigations, luckily all ok.
Suffering really intense lower back pain which comes and goes. Legs ache on and off. Needing to wee more often. Not a urine infection though. Bloating and tummy pain. As soon as I eat, have a sensation that I need to go to the loo. Don't suffer constipation, but tend to have the other but not too badly. Always feel rough in the mornings.
Anyone else get these symptoms?

Sounds like food intolerance or allergy. Artificial sweetners can cause the symptoms you describe. Are you on any other medication?

jalopy · 22/10/2006 20:06

Not got coeliac disease. Am currently on wheat and dairy free diet. Not made much difference.

oh jalopy, sorry to hear you are still suffering.

Have they tested your stool in case you have a long lasting bug?

Otherwise, have you been really stressed recently?

jalopy · 22/10/2006 20:20

Hi, fox. My problems started 3 months ago and have have cascaded into all sorts of related health problems. Very difficult to determine the cause but yes, have been very stressed by it. Can't seem to get out of the loop.

it is hard isn't it - because if you got really stressed, then all this stomach stuff happened and then you carry on being stressed it sort of feeds itself (iyswim)

have you looked at any relaxation stuff - like slow breathing, yoga etc.?

3littlefrogs · 22/10/2006 20:28

Have you sufered from other "system" problems, for example - dry mouth/eyes, joint pains or stiffness?

lulumama · 22/10/2006 20:28

have you had a diagnosis...and been precribed anything

did the doc advise dietary changes

the reason i ask is that Crohns disease ( inflammatory bowel dieseas? can cause back problems...ankolysing spondilits ( have spelt that totally wrong!)

alexa1 · 22/10/2006 20:39

littlefrogs - why do u mention dry mouth, joint pain and stiffness? its just i am suffering the same as jalopy only i suffer constipation then loose bowels.

3littlefrogs · 22/10/2006 20:44

Well - I don't want to worry or scare anyone, but there are one or two conditions that are triggered or agravated by stress. They are caused by the body's immune system turning on the body. Any "system" can be affected, and often, in turns. For example, for a few weeks the alimentary system can be affected, only for that to improve and the skin to go haywire, or the chest gets bad, and so on. That is why i asked about preceding problems.

3littlefrogs · 22/10/2006 20:48

Constipation followed by diarrhoea plus pain and wind is typical IBS. Cutting out fizzy drinks and reducing the roughage can help, but stress is the main culprit. Aromatherapy and massage can really help, but sadly not available on the NHS

podgegl20 · 22/10/2006 21:04

You have more or less exactly described my symptons!I started off feeling sick with indigestion and now having problems with my bowel. I too have had various tests, endoscopy, barium meal and colonoscopy - none of which have shown anything up. I have also been getting achey legs and lower back pain. I have another appointment with the consultant next Monday.I do sympathise, I feel like I've forgotton what it's like to feel normal.

jalopy · 22/10/2006 21:06

I had reflux initially and endoscopy showed some gastritis. Now on regular Zantac for that. I have lost weight though. Otherwise, all the 'lower' symptoms might be IBS because sigmoidoscope and blood tests haven't revealed anything. Dr. didn't think it was crohns either. At a loss at the mo.

Try googling diverticulitis. sorry - I don't know how to do links, but you might find some helpful information.

Littlefish · 22/10/2006 21:34

I have IBS and possibly diverticulitis. I was in hospital with it twice last year. I now take a big measure of liquid aloe vera every morning. I haven't had any major attacks since, and as soon as I can feel that sort of crampy, windy, bloaty pain coming on, I just take a double or triple dose and it seems to go away.

You have my great sympathies - it's really miserable.

3littlefrogs · 22/10/2006 21:48

jalopy - i am so sorry you are feeling so ill. Sorry to keep firing questions at you - I am just trying to think of anything that might help. did your GP test for giardia lambdia? that causes similar symtoms, but is often the last thing anybody thinks of. It is a waterborne infection and is easily treated, but only with a specific medication (flagyl). Easily diagnosed with the right lab test, (stool sample).

lulumama · 22/10/2006 21:49

jalopy --sounds like the majority of conditions are ruled out...do you have any medication to help with pain & bloating?

alexa- as far as i know, mucus and bleeding can be a sign of Crohns or ulcerative colitis...or possibly some food intolerance...

have you been checked out by the doctor?

jalopy · 23/10/2006 17:05

Thanks lulu and 3little frogs.
Did ask gastro dr about parasites but he said not. Have to say, did wonder about giardia because I match a lot of symptoms. Still underweight despite vast consumption of food. Will ask him next time about sending stool to lab.
Thanks.
