A friend of mine has had a double mastectomy and is now undergoing chemo - what practical help can I offer, bearing in mind we live 3 hours apart? -

Making meals is a fab idea

when my dd was 8 months old (now 5) she was critically ill and in hospital for 5 weeks.

My ex boss (I was a Nanny to their children) had cooked us some meals and puddings and brought them in a huge bag round to the house

It was such a lovely gesture that no on else thought of and It still makes me smile to this day

Hope your friend is ok

sorry maybe not a good idea when you are far apart, But maybe if you were going to visit at all....

Racking my brains for suggestions and failing miserably.

Maybe just make it clear to her that you are there whenever she needs a shoulder via email or phone. The distance does make it so hard.

Someone wrote the following in a get well card for my mum (she had a mastectomy last Tuesday). I think it is great, maybe it will help your friend:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO-HOO, what a ride!"
