Sudocream is useless- what to do?

Son is 17wks, and has had a red rash and slightly inflamed penis for about 2 weeks. Sudocream actually made it worse, which just confused my HV- she just kept saying, 'well, i'd recommend Sudocream normally' as if it is the only product in the world! Doctor has prescribed something, but that's not really doing much either. Son doesn't seem bothered by it- could it be related to his teething? And does anyone have any recommendations of something to clear it up?

have you tried something like savlon ?

I was going to suggest teething - my boys have always had sore bottoms when they have particularly acid poo.

Also nappy off time may help.

harpsichordcarrion · 20/10/2006 08:44

Metanium? that always worked for me.
stains horribly though, so watch it

hermykne · 20/10/2006 08:45

bepanthan - in sainsburys and chemists.

Furball · 20/10/2006 08:48

Try changing brand of nappy, sometimes what suits one doesn't suit another. Also hold back with the wipes for a while especially if they are J & J as these contain alcohol which can irritate. Use plain old cotton wool and water or cold tea. Agree with metanium that always worked for my ds but it's hit and miss for a bit until you find something that suits.

Some suggestions:

Cloth wipes or cotton wool and cold camomile tea to wash his bum
(J&J wipes brought both of mine out in a rash, and they make me sneeze!)

Tbsp of bicarbonate of soda (buy in small pot from the Baking section!) dissolved in the bath (and no soap or bubble bath or anything)

Make sure he is really dry, then thin layer of metanium (to heal) and thin layer of sudocrem on top (to keep him dry). Found sudocrem pretty useless once they'd got a rash - its a barrier cream to keep the wetness out isn't it? Not to heal? Not sure ...

Turn your heating on, take his clothes and nappy off and park him on a very large towel. And retire to a safe distance.

Change nappy brand

It could be teething - they drool more, swallow the drool, and have disgusting nappies.

Hope some of that helps.

Savlon has worked wonders for my ds.

Ingalls · 20/10/2006 09:01

Metanium is brill stuff, dd gets awful bum when teething - broken skin etc and one application is enough to make a huge diff.

DetentionGrrrl · 20/10/2006 09:01

Thanks guys. Shall try some suggestions on him and see how it goes!

DS is allergic to Sudocrem - if you read the tiny print on the tub itacknowledges this can happen. Our HV gave us a huge tub of Aqueous cream and that really helped

KristinaM · 20/10/2006 09:04

agree with the others - no wipes, soap or bubble bath. and metanium - miracle cream

daisy1999 · 20/10/2006 09:04

metanium metanium metanium - as you can see I can't recommend it highly enough - miracle stuff! i didn't believe it until I used it!

DelGhoul · 20/10/2006 09:06

yep metanium here or bepanthen if it's not too severe.

pippo · 20/10/2006 09:09

sounds strange but I was told that whipped egg white is the best thing, along with the other advice, of no soaps, wipes etc and lots of nappy off time.

nebthenoob · 20/10/2006 09:32

I vote for Johnson's nappy cream - Sudocrem irritated my kids' skin horribly.

LadyTophamHatt · 20/10/2006 09:36

sudocrem really stings on broken skin too.
I've used it on myslef for varios things and if the skin is broken it makes me wince.

Metanuim all the way.....

Guitarman · 20/10/2006 09:57

I'd use a natural product, like Aloe Vera Jelly from FLP.

could it be thrush? In which case you need an antifungal cream such as canesten.

Frizombie · 20/10/2006 10:13

Metanium again! or drapolene or Vasogen, which is also very good!

donnie · 20/10/2006 10:13

another vote for metanium - it works brilliantly.

dreamcatcher · 20/10/2006 10:33

Plain old vaseline as a barrier with germoline to heal. Doesn't sudocream have lanolin in? could be an allergy.

BernieBear · 20/10/2006 11:22

Same thing with my ds and Sudocream, it was evil on my ds's skin. Bepanthen worked (still does) a treat!

colditz · 20/10/2006 11:34

i'd go for metanium, it's brilliant stuff. You'll need to soap your hands to get it off though! It's like wax!

Piffle · 20/10/2006 11:42

another for metanium
