Sudocream is useless- what to do?

DetentionGrrrl · 20/10/2006 08:36

Son is 17wks, and has had a red rash and slightly inflamed penis for about 2 weeks. Sudocream actually made it worse, which just confused my HV- she just kept saying, 'well, i'd recommend Sudocream normally' as if it is the only product in the world! Doctor has prescribed something, but that's not really doing much either. Son doesn't seem bothered by it- could it be related to his teething? And does anyone have any recommendations of something to clear it up?

Metanium is brilliant BUT it stains like a bastard (sorry) !

My dd had terrible nappy rash when she was a baby, tried all the usual creams and nothing worked.Sudocream actually made her worse ,the worst case of nappy rash she had ,was when she had big blisters all over her nappy area and even putting vaseline on made her scream.I went to my chemist and he recommended drapolene and it cleared it up within hours.I used it with my son too,in my opinion its the best cream out there.

alison222 · 20/10/2006 12:14

Matanium too- oh andif it is really bad I got something called - i think - timodene fron the doctors it was antiseptic, antibiiotic and antifungal and had to be used under the metainum. Cleared up dd's Raw naapy rash in 12 hours.

corrina28 · 20/10/2006 13:17

BEPANTHEN, had a sample of it in my bounty pack went out a bought a lareg tube of it cost bout £5 but it lasted for ever, the stuff is fantastic, i even use it on ds2 who is 7 if he gets a little bit sore!

hauntymandy · 21/10/2006 21:57

only use any cream when absolutly needed as it stops the water resistance of the nappies

PanicPants · 21/10/2006 21:59

I tried everything, and in the end it was a combination of bepanthan, and a cup of strong camomille tea cooled down and used with cotton wall to clean ds' bottom instead of wet wipes.

MummyPig · 21/10/2006 22:12

If the creams etc don't work, I would take him to the doctors on the suspicion that it was thrush. Tell them how long it has been going on for. They can give you an antifungal cream for him(essentially the same stuff as in Canesten).

My boys were quite susceptible to thrush and I used cotton wool and water or cammomile tea to wipe, with cornflour instead of talc and lots of fresh air to dry out the area. Usually did the trick but sometimes something stronger was needed.

Imho, the prob with all the barrier creams like sudocrem, metanium etc. is that they can lock moisture in to the area when you really want it to dry out.

EliBoo · 21/10/2006 22:56

Metanium with a layer of Vaseline over the top as a barrier.

dd had raw bits from nappy rash after a bout of diarrhoea...Metanium plus Vaseline (tip from lady with lots of kids in queue at chemists) made it better overnight.

But agree that if it doesnt', get to GP in case of thrush...hope its better soon!

SofiaAmes · 22/10/2006 04:51

I second the canestan recommendation. Sometimes they get what looks like nappy rash but is really thrush. Also if you are using pampers or huggies, try switching to one of the supermarket brands. I always had good luck with tesco's or asda's.

ludaloo · 22/10/2006 06:43

It sounds like thrush to me, my ds had it not so long ago. The end of his willy was very red and sore looking. Canesten got rid of it very quickly.
Other than that I agree that Metanium works far better than sudocrem.

hauntymandy · 22/10/2006 07:09

camilasan is cood

DetentionGrrrl · 22/10/2006 07:49

Well, haven't used any wipes or bath products on him, and have been using Daktaran (as per Doctor) bit better, but not better if you know what i mean! Will try Metanium next perhaps.

It does sound very much like thrush...I'd try canestan too...
Good luck

princessmel · 22/10/2006 07:55

I use Bepanthen which always does the trick apart from the time the Gp prescribed something for a really bad case ds had.

DetentionGrrrl · 22/10/2006 15:55

GP tomorrow- got worse and spread to his tummy

Tui Bee Balme - wonderful stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

liquidclocks · 22/10/2006 16:07

Repeating what's been said really - DS had a nasty nappy rash for ages that looked like lots of little red shiny spots all merged together - turned out it was thrush - a canesten type cream did the trick - active ingredient was clotrimazole. He got it after 3 courses of antibiotics within a short space of time.

liquidclocks · 22/10/2006 16:08

Oh and btw the point at which I realised it wasn't 'normal' nappy rash was when spots started appearing on his tummy too.

Hope your GP helps.

DetentionGrrrl · 23/10/2006 15:03

Well, didn't make it to GP, but my mother says lots of nappy-off time, no bath products/wipes, and controversially, no creams. She doesn't think it sounds like thrush though. Shall try Mammy's advice for a day or two.

Bibiboo · 23/10/2006 20:01

Sorry if I repeat, but any brand other than Papmers gave dd awful nappy rash, so bad that she'd scream when I was trying to wipe her/put cream on. Sudcreme did nothing but Bepanthnen always cleared it up in a day or two.

jewishmum · 13/10/2022 18:38

Metanium saved my boy's bottom.

I've found only contact with poo causes diaper rash in my DC and can happen in as little as 30 minutes. I use disposable diapers only and they are very absorbent and keep pee off the skin. However, some babies may be more sensitive.
Try changing diaper as soon as baby has had a pee/poo. Rinse skin and pat dry. Apply cream every time. Sudocream is fine. Allow baby skin to be exposed to air for 30 mins a day (ideally after a pee/poo to minimize accidents. Just lay baby on a towel for tummy time with a bare bum. If rash is particularly bad, ie a raised/swollen rash, you can apply a bit of yeast cream (Canestan
etc) for a few days under diaper rash cream.
(all tips are from my midwife)

cathycake · 13/10/2022 18:53

Egg white is great it acts like an extra layer of skin. Nappy off for as long as possible .. then stand back

Brokendaughter · 13/10/2022 18:53

My son has extremely sensitive skin.
Sudocrem etc.. all would leave him raw & bleeding.

The cure was to use sensitive skin washing powder on all fabrics, lots of nappy off time & a little lanolin on the sore bits when he was put back in a nappy until he healed.
Nipple cream is normally made of pure lanolin.

After that, other than keeping him normally clean (with water not the cream cleaners) he didn't need stuff like sudocrem & never got any sort of rash again.

Bamaluz · 13/10/2022 18:55

I should imagine the rash has gone by now
