Do you feel awkward to ask GP for a private referral?

I think I'm lucky to have Bupa healthcare thanks to my company.

However, whenever I need to ask my GP for a private referral, I always feel awkward and guilty. It is as if my GP is think, "You betray NHS."

Do you think a GP is likely to think so. Even if a GP does not think that way, does he feel different when being asked for a private referral?

To be honest, GP is more likely to be relieved, as they will know that you are likely to be seen and sorted more quickly, and will not be back in their surgery again before the hospital finally sends you an appointment. Don't be embarrassed to ask - you have the cover, so use it. You're not betraying the NHS, you are using an alternative service and freeing up a slot that can be used by someone else.
The GP really won't care whether you go NHS or private, they just want to get things sorted for you. It makes no difference to them.

Never. My preference is always to go privately and make that clear from the start.

Err, you're saving the practice money as someone else is paying for your treatment so no, I don't think they would mind too much.

I'm sure they sometimes feel frustrated that less fortunate patients may have long delays and over stretched services within the nhs but basically you are freeing a space up.

It doesn't save the practice money but you get faster (not always better) treatment. I use private physios as the NHS wait is up to 8 weeks. I'm always happy when my patients go privately as they get seen sooner.
