For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Welcome back everyone (and welcome to any newies who are very welcome to join us). Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm the last week or so but I intend to work up some pzazz again this week and hope you will all join me.

I am eating a big bowl of oats, soya milk, raisins, seeds, apple and pear so I reckon that is 4 portions already.

I won't be going to the gym today, but am going for dinner and to a spa with two 17 year olds, so I reckon I may break a sweat at least

Little bump hoping NQC etc might come and share her fruity wisdom

I've not been particularly fruity of late - crazy weekend. I doubt I had 5 minutes of exercise, or 5 servings of fruit and veg, either day.

But I did work out that I did seven hours of aerobic exercise last week, Monday to Friday. And this week should be a bit more normal than last week - my helpful neighbour is around, even though DH is away Tuesday to Thursday (Chicago, an award).

tracyk · 16/10/2006 09:42

I did my 8 minute workout from my taebo dvd on Sat - but couldn't have warmed up enough as my back muscles were really sore on Sunday!

Went to local fruit market on friday and stocked up. Tried beetroot and carrot juice from my juicer - I can honestly say it was the worst thing I have ever tasted!

NotQuiteCockney · 16/10/2006 10:16

Oh, I quite like beetroot, carrot and apple or orange. But beetroot is a really strong flavour.

We eat it grated in salads, too.

tracyk · 16/10/2006 10:39

I quite like it raw - but I peeled it and then juiced it - but iot still tasted like it was a glass of mud! I presume that's what they mean by 'earthy' tasting!

NotQuiteCockney · 16/10/2006 10:56

Hmm, yes, it does taste a bit "earthy", yes.

I think a glass of juice that is mostly carrot, a bit of orange (mostly to sto the carrot from changing colour), and a bit of beetroot, comes out v well.

Beetroot juice does tend to turn the intestine into a freeway ... with rather startling-coloured output. I expect that of raw (or stir-fried) beetroot, but the juice does it too, if you have any quantity.

FrannyandZooey · 16/10/2006 11:20

Morning tracy - beetroot and carrot was a brave choice. It is too earthy for me to have more than a small glass of, as well.

NQC, why does beetroot have that effect? I mean I know it has fibre in, but so do lots of other things (and yes I think we have had this conversation before, but I can't remember the answer)

Good morning! Last week's thread died a death didn't it?!! I spent Saturday and Sunday afternoon weeding and tidying up the garden and felt quite invigorated afterwards. Just taken ds to his gym class and had a wee run around and a go on the trampoline. But I've got Pilates again tonight so that'll be my proper exercise.

I haven't been just as conscientious on the f&v front; well I've been doing ok but not getting up to 10. This morning I have had some dates and that's all! Think I'll go and get an apple now...

Franny dinner and spa sounds nice

tracyk · 16/10/2006 11:31

I think I shall stick to carrot juice!
I saw an advert for Birds Eye or Findus - frozen soya beans. Anyone tried them? They look like peas.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/10/2006 13:03

I don't know, Frances - but it can't be the fibre, as beetroot juice does it. (And yes, some people say all juices do that, but they don't to me!)

MrsOhHu · 16/10/2006 18:55

I love eating fruit and veg. I find it usually quite easy, but I don't count how much. I think it's more important how much you eat over a week, so if you have a day eating rubbish, it won't matter much in the broader scheme of things. Processed food is better avoided but there is apparently no one superfood to cure our ills! New Scientist had an article about diet. More recently NS had an article about food production saying that if we knew how most of it arrived on our plates, especially meat, we wouldn't eat it. It was referring to supermarket food.

FrannyandZooey · 16/10/2006 22:16

Hello MrsOhHu

I expect you are right about what you eat over a week being more important than per day, but some of us have found the "10 a day" idea useful in encouraging ourselves to eat more healthily.

It's an easy thing to focus on and hopefully quite enjoyable, too.

Fillyjonk sent me the NS article about diet - I found it very interesting, especially the part about people's reporting of what they eat being so unreliable as to make some research worthless!

I am confused now HC, I didn't see this post last night, but I did catch up with you in the end, didn't I? (blimey you must have been desperate for company to venture so far from your party rings...)

Hope everyone is feeling well and energetic this morning. I have had a headache for 3 days but I am still eating shedloads of fruit, and have a fridge full of veg which needs making into a stew

I always manage to talk myself out of doing exercise. If I get up early enough - I think it would be too much of a shock to my body to go on the cross trainer - and during the day - I don't want to get all sweaty and need another shower!
I did nothing on Sunday or yesterday - must try and motivate myself to do something tonight. Its miserable weather - so don't even feel like taking ds out this afternoon.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/10/2006 10:08

I am officially under the weather. Yesterday I got myself in a sugar peak/trough low loop, and today I am breaking that cycle. (Yesterday, I also managed to not exercise at all! Well, 4x5 minutes on the bike.) Today I will do 40 minutes on the bike (Well, 2x20 + 4x5).

I have had muesli, and am having two apples and two oranges as a snack. I have given the lemon drizzle cake to the builders, so opportunities for sugar stupidity are being reduced.

Zippetydoodahzippetyday · 17/10/2006 10:09

I get orgasmic over onions if that helps?

MrsOhHu · 18/10/2006 21:58

the very idea of doing anything I don't HAVE to do! I usually walk the dogs for an hour or 2 a day, but often dd aged 2 is in tow and not in her pram because dd aged 3 months is, so we walk, very very slowly. I'm knackered. Baby dd isn't sleeping at the moment so nor am I. Managed to make leek and potato soup tonight instead of heating up a pizza. Leeks are v. good with nutmeg and butter!

Oh, I did ok yesterday (4 pieces of fruit, giant stir-fry with tons of different kinds of veg) and today (4 pieces of fruit, leftover stir-fry, and strange fried root veg thing, oh, and grapes).

Very under the weather though, no energy, no motivation.

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 08:21

I have been slacking, too, on the F & V front, but still slogging on at the gym. I am so amazingly chuffed with my personal trainer (who I don't pay any extra for, it is just part of the gym membership) who notices what I have been doing, and leaves me little post-it notes saying "congratulations on the tricep extension!"

I hope you feel better today NQC. MrsOhHu I hope you get some sleep! Aviatrix good luck with your exam. Tracy how are you getting on this week?

If you are eating them, then join us

Hallo hallo

I am family visitor free - we ate lots of Bircher museli by request. Another who has not been taking notice or extra effort with the F&V
Ate miso on toast with apple for breakfast... weirdo desperate measures when no Marmite available!

F&Z notes from your trainer do you leave notes for him commenting on body parts?

Anyone heard from FMF is she okay???

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 08:45

Hiya Papillon! How was your sister? (it was your sister, wasn't it?)

FMF is ok, I think, but busy

Yes I should leave messages for him, shouldn't I? "Congratulations on your really excellent arse. Love, Franny x"
