Calling all lovers of leeks and admirers of aubergines - 10 / 10 Club week 11

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Sister and my cousin and her man

It was like a reunion!

Mandarian season has arrived and the kids love peeling them. So have a big bag to scoff. Off out this afternoon and will buy a bootful of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.

Papillon · 19/10/2006 08:58

Leaving him suggestive shaped Fruit and Vege with note attached??

Must away and cut out men (gingerbread men)

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 09:01

poor boy, he is about 20 or something, I bet he gets all the middle aged women after him

Not been too good this week I'm afraid.
Haven't posted to admit this - now I've been to Tae Bo and had a bowl of granola - I feel I can join in again!
So whats the diff between satsumas and mandarins and tangerines? I've been buying satsumas and they are lovely and sweet. Don't mandarins have pips?
I am swithering whether to get a gym membership - the closest one to me is almost £100 a month and has crappy aerobic classes - but good kiddies pool etc. The best gym is about a 35 min drive away - has fantastic classes and an outdoor pool - but less kiddie friendly. Would I use any of them? Am I kidding myself on?

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 13:07

100 quid a month! Eek. I don't know, mine is so much cheaper than that, that I never felt it was a huge risk to take on, also you can cancel mine at any time. Personally I would no way join a gym that was 35 min away, but maybe your situation is diiferent?

Love 'swithering', btw

Hi all, nice to see the thread in active convos again.
I have been lapsing really. But speaking of beetroot, I am going to make borst today. Not sure of the spelling but I think it is a russian soup made from beetroot. In case anyone is interested

tracyk · 19/10/2006 13:17

sorry - £100 - is for joint! I'd want dh to take ds swimming while I did a class.

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 17:24

I am interested, Overrun! Borscht makes my teeth feel funny, it's all metallic, isn't it? Very good for you though I think

Tracy, still quite a lot though isn't it?

I have been doing ok I suppose. What have I had today... prune juice, pear, apple, (homemade cranberry muffin!), orange and just had bubble & squeak for dinner. But I'm feeling a bit demotivated, tired... don't know if it's the wet weather or not getting enough sleep but I just want to curl up and lie down all day! Of course I am not doing that I am running around after my active toddler Oh and it so dark in the mornings now, such a wrench to get out of bed... Ok I will stop moaning now. I think I need a personal trainer to kick me into touch.

Greensleeves · 19/10/2006 19:29

That's a sizzling thread title this time, Franny

Greensleeves · 19/10/2006 19:30

Borscht is Polish, innit?

Overrun · 19/10/2006 19:32

Is it Greensleeves, so not only did I spell it wrong, but now have the wrong country. Plus only one of my children ate it, even ds1 couldn't be tempted by purple soup (which is his favourite colour).

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2006 20:54

Nope, Borscht is a national dish in both Russia and Poland, I am sure.

Here you go, Wiki says:

"Borscht is widely believed to be originally from Ukraine, but is a part of the local culinary heritage of many Eastern and Central European nations. The soup is called bar?čiai in Lithuanian, is often given as Borschtsch in German (however in East Prussia where the dish was native it was called Bartsch), barszcz in Polish, борщ (help·info) borshch in Russian and Ukrainian, and borş in Romanian."

So there. Was it nice? My Polish friend always makes it for Wigilia and I always have to find a way to empty it out into a plant pot or something when he isn't looking, because by half way through the bowl my teeth are totally on edge

Borscht comes in a couple of varieties. The Ukranians even make white borscht, which has no beets in it at all. And normal Ukranian borscht has meat and veg and all sorts in it.

The thin red soup that is just diced beets, with a bit of sour cream on top, I know as Jewish borscht, as the only place I've ever had it in Jewish restaurants. I'm sure it's associated with some country, but I'm not sure which. I'm pretty sure the Russians make busy borscht, not plain borscht.

I did ok yesterday, guacomole, ratatouille, strange fritters, lots of fruit. I am insanely tired and disorganised - someone showed up to give me a lift to a committee meeting, and I was just in my dressing gown, getting ready for bed.

FrannyandZooey · 20/10/2006 07:43

Are you ill, or is it just life? Tell us if we can do anything at all...

I am totally focused today on cramming as much f & v into myself as possible. Mostly orally, I hope.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 20/10/2006 07:57

Probably a mix of ill and life - I do have some sort of chesty/snotty bug, and no motivation for exercise (so I've been skipping what I can). Partly, too, it's the fact I was on an insane exercise schedule for two weeks, and then DH was away for a couple of nights.

Oh, and the stress associated with DS1 going Wrong at school, and having to deal with all that.

FrannyandZooey · 20/10/2006 08:02

Oh no

I am very sad to hear all that especially the bit about ds. I feel cross on your behalf

There was a thread about it somewhere. He was Horrid at school on Tuesday.

In theory, today, after school, we might go out for dinner with some people, which would be good. Oh, and I'm starting to make friends with the other mums - one is foreign, at least a bit (Singapore, half-Chinese), and the other is Strange (no telly at home). ;-)

Fillyjonk - its a David Lloyd I am hoping to join - which one are you at? Drat - my mum mentioned it was about £80 joint - has it jumped to £100 now?

It has an outdoor pool though which will be good next summer - and it is still he best gym in Glasgow.

There is a loophole for Homes Place and another that yo get 6 months free membership if you take out private healthcare - which works out cheaper than normal membership. Need to see where m neaest one is.
