I have had a supposed abscess and have been on anti b's for a week. They have not reduced it and it's got a little bigger and is now (vomiting) leaking.

The locum GP was rather blase about it despite the fact I am immuno supressed.

How should I proceed now tomorrow. It hurts and is mildly leaky. What do I need to fix? :-(

If antibiotics have not worked you may well need a small procedure to open it up and drain it. This can be done under local or general anaesthetic (depending on size and location). Suggest going to A&E early in the morning having not had anything except water, so that it can be looked at and referred to the surgeons if needs be.

CMOTDibbler · 29/12/2014 22:07

You need to see a doctor about it again - it should have reduced after a week on antibs, and either needs draining or a change of drugs or possibly both

Where is it?

mineofuselessinformation · 29/12/2014 22:13

Do you visit the hospital clinic regularly? If so, call the hospital and ask them to get the registrar (specialist in your area) on call to call you back. Hope that makes sense.
Or, go into A&E and wait to be seen. You can't take risks with immunosupression and infections. Hope you get it sorted.

You do need to see a doctor again, it should be improving by now.

Another who suggest A&E. I've been referred straight to SAU with abscesses before and had them drained the same day. If you go early enough with empty stomach it may well be done and you out on same day. (Altho I'm not sure if immunosuppressed would mean you stay in longer - sorry)

Thanks for the replies.I went back to my GP this morning and she has given me another weeks worth of anti b's and told me to come back to see the nurse on friday.

I have now rung my rheumy nurse so awaiting for her to call back as GP says taking a 2000mg daily dose of floxywhatever it's called is ok with my methotrexate injection.I did a bit of research and found out it can interact.

She seems to think that because it's started to drain by itself it should be ok if not then the nurse can drain it in the clinic on friday Shock

Had one there and it took 4 weeks with of penicillin to clear it. A week at 2000 a day, week at 1500, then 1000 then 500. It kept draining but refilling so kept ab until infection had cleared. Hope it's sorted soon.

How about some hot moist compresses? Maybe use hot water with Epsom salts in it? I think that would help draw it out.
