Question about exercise

My friend tells me that unless Im prepared to do hot sweaty out of breath exercise for an hour it isnt worth me doing it at all. Is she right?

Im looking to burn fat but also tone up

An hour?!? No.

Exercise can improve cardio, it can improve strength, it can improve flexibility. You can work all three without doing an hour out of breath. You can improve strength and flexibility without ever getting out of breath. Does your friend exercise compulsively? Or is she someone with some interesting excuses for avoiding exercise altogether?

To burn fat you need to work out at 60% over your resting heart rate, for at least 30 mins, that would go up the fitter you get.

nqc - she's obsessive about weight loss and exercise. She seems to devise exercise regimes and diet plans for everyone

Hmm, but people do lose fat by just walking. I think you need to do 20 or 30 minutes of hard cardio to improve your cardiovascular health significantly, but gentle walking or whatever can still encourage weight loss.

Your mate is a nutter, sorry, I'd stop discussing exercise with her. (And I say this as someone who did 2 hours of cardio of various sorts today, whoops. But 1.5 hours of that was the school run ...)

My gym instructer helped me design a workout plan, and it certainly isnt an hour and yes i do get hot and sweat but i dont lose my breath. I really enjoy it, its enough to feel like im doing something but not so much that I dont ever want to work out again.

At the moment i do 30mins CV, and then weights after to tone up, ive only been going 2 weeks and i get hot and sweaty and a little out of breath, but can still talk, iykwim.

Im really enjoying it too!
