Son's finger nail

Hi, I'm new to this, so be gentle! My son aged 7 got an infected finger, mainly from picking the skin around the nail (seem to remember doing the same as a child - the sins of our parents etc!). The nail now seems to be coming away down the right hand side of it, and around half the base - do i need to take him to a doctor? Am I too late? It was sore for a day or so, but not now, although still red around the finger joint.
Thanks

It will probably just fall off, another will grow.
If it starts to get infected or smelly he might need antibiotics, just try and keep it clean.

Hello by the way!

Have a sore nail myself due to catchingit on bedding while wearing acrylics... am soaking it in salt water - not sure if recommended but works for me...

Thank you all, will not dial 999 just yet, and have a glass of wine instead!

Keep an eye on it - might need antibiotics if it gets more inflamed.

Will do, thanks - having been sore, there is no prolonged screaming when I press it, so assume it is a lot better (he has a pretty male pain threshold, so not too high), and have it now covered.
