Can you grow and then loose a bit of bone?

A few months ago I found a small hard lump on my finger joint. I read up and assumed it was a ganglion but went to the doctors to check. They referred me for an x-ray where they told me and showed me clearly on the screen a small ball of bone had formed at the base of my finger. I have an appointment this week to see if it can be removed but I have lost it! It was definately there yesterday but today it has almost all gone. It was almost the size of a pea, so not tiny. Could it cause me any harm if it is floating about? What might have happened to it? Could they have been wrong about the x-ray?
Any ideas or similar experiences much appreciated.
