Is it possible to get mastitis when you haven't actually breastfed for 10 years?

Because that's exactly what it feels like.

I have a really sore breast, it feels exactly like when I had mastitis - I feel as if I've got a blocked milk duct or something, it's agony. Also I'mfeeling a bit shivery and feverish like I'm coming down with a cold.

I went to the doctor a couple of months ago and got referred to a specialist who said there's no probability of breast cancer, but this pain tonight is worse than anything I had then and it feels so familiar. He told me to get some starflower oil or something like that, I can't remember now, wrote it down but lost it. Damn.

Should I go and buy a green cabbage? Grin

Yes, I had it at age 15. I was not pregnant or breastfeeding.

Go and get some antibiotics.

Really? Amazing.

Do you know what caused it?

Not a clue, probably growing breast tissue.

Mastitis is not exclusively linked to milk production. See the doctor.

HappyAsASandboy · 27/11/2014 02:01

Yes, it is possible.

Any breast tissue can become infected - even on a man. Breastfeeding makes it more likely because the tissue is active, but it can happen at any time

I hope your GP is helpful.

I had a few years ago. Never been pregnant.
Pus from nipples is delightful.

My friends mum had mastitis last year, 6 weeks after becoming a granny for the first time!

MissYamabuki · 27/11/2014 04:38

My mum got mastitis over 20 years after BFing her last baby (me Grin ). Her doctor asked when she'd had the baby and was very surprised at the reply! I'd never seen her so poorly Sad but she got much better very quickly with antibiotics.

You need to go back to your Dr, mastitis can make you feel soooo bad!

MiddletonPink · 27/11/2014 13:56

My friend had this. It was an abscess. I would go the GP.

I have had mastitis twice, the first time I hadn't bf for about 6 years.
The second one turned into an abscess that needed 10 weeks of antibiotics to clear the infection.
Make a doctors appointment asap.

Thanks all, went and got anti biotics today

Hope it doesn't take 10 weeks!
