Reflux?

My 9 week old baby cries constantly and always appears unhappy. Recently he has stopped breast feeding so I have had to put him on a bottle - things have got worse. He only likes to be upright, struggles through feeds, getting upset, I have trouble burping him and prefers sleeping with head raised. I wonder if it could be reflux and if there's anything I can get over the counter to help. I don't think I can cope with the crying for much longer.

my son is now 9 months old and when he was your baby's age never fed either from the breast or bottle without being very sick afterwards. the best thing i did was go to my gp and get a prescription for infant gaviscon which you can add to his bottles. i also got a referral to a paediatrician who gave him pre-thickened formula to make it harder to be sick and then lactose-free to be more gentle on his tummy. he also had an ant-acid for a while to stop the acid refulx from damaging his gut. the good news is that as your baby gets older and more upright it gets much better. my son was totally better by the time he was 5 months old - solids definitely helped too. godd luck

Thanks for replying. I will make an appointment to see the GP tomorrow. Just wondering when you started him on solids- was it 6 months like the health professionals say?

well done to you flipflop, even if you arent sure whats causing it you are certainly a very intuitive and observant Mum.

My dd was treated in exactly the same way as Loulou's baby and I would put money on what you have described is reflux.

Go to the GP tell them you suspect reflux and they will put him on Gaviscon. Should make a big difference.
Best wishes.

As my baby was being seen by paediatrician he advised me when to start weaningwhich was at 5 1/2 months. I took it really slow and gave lots of baby rice until he was 6 months and so far he's a fantastic eater!! The gaviscon worked well enough along with the lactose-free formula for me to avoid having to wean him early ie 4 months. i also found sitting him a bouncy chair helped as i could not lie him on the floor for more than a few seconds without him being really sick. i used to dread him having a poo whilst he was eating as changing after a feed meant most of it came back up!! fortunately he liked the bouncy chair as he could see more and once he started sitting up it was much easier. hope all goes well this the gp
