that says it all really.
in tremendous pain, can't swallow, can't speak, feel completely rotten get this about 2ce a year and I'm BORED of it!
Anyone out there have any miracle cures, or useful advice of how to get rid of it when you first feel that tell-tale tingling in the throat?

Harumph.

Make a big glass of water as hot as you can stand it, dissolve a big heaped tablespoon of salt and gargle with all of it every hour. It sucks but it works.

Horrible, horrible, horrible, loads of sympathy. I used to get it every year at least without fail but haven't had it yet this year. Hope you've got anti-biotics. Whenever I feel that first tingle I hot-foot it to the docs and demand drugs even though I know there's nothing to be seen yet. Gargling with aspirin can help to and also corsodyl mouthwash tends to have a numbing effect. Look after yourself.

merrygoround · 15/04/2004 22:20

Oh poor you

Also used to get it every year as a kid, less often as an adult, but when dd had it this year she kindly passed it on. Mind you I must say I preferred having it myself to her having it. Was a bit shocked by a work colleague telling me that she was told she might have had to go to hospital because she swelled up so much that she would not have been able to breathe. Sorry, don't want to alarm you, but her first GP had given nothing, it was the second who gave drugs that gave her this warning. Agree about gargling with salt water (why it helps I have no idea,) - but it is disgusting.

squirmyworm · 16/04/2004 00:02

fellow sufferer and dh has just had it so much much sympathy - it is the worst feeling. for relief try juicing carrot and apple with ginger -- it numbs and soothes....no miracle cures I'm afraid just sleep, aspirin and sympathy

littlemissbossy · 16/04/2004 00:17

am fellow sufferer ... for years now! gargling either soluable aspirin or salt water helps ... although it tastes crap. Hope you're feeling better soon

  1. Move out of the city. Like you I got this twice yearly until I spent a winter in the country.
  1. Follow Majorstress's advice: hot salt water gargle. My father is a physician and yet this home treatment is what he recommends above all else. For some odd reason, it works.

  2. If you're at all worried it might be strept, get it looked at because there can be rare but serious complications to heart if you're not given antibiotics promptly.

thank you everyone! obviously hit a nerve there with fellow sufferers. it is HORRIBLE, isn't it? worse this morning as well.

I hadn't been doing the salt water gargles (why not? because I am STUPID! hits forehead in despair) so will do those. I've just finished the last of my corsodyl which tastes gross but does numb things up a bit. am just going to pick up my antibs - my tonsils are so enormous they are practically blocking my throat, eaughghghghgh.

expatkat.... I've moved to the country already! But my doctor tells me that the last time I had tonsillitis was about 2 years ago in London (I've been here for a year and a half) - so maybe I am getting it more infrequently now I'm here. Mind you the only sure fire way of avoiding it I find is to get pregnant - I've never had it when I'm pregnant - bit drastic, though....

thank you all! xx
