What painkillers works best for migraine?

Nurofen for nothing for me for any kind of pain. I am in Australia & can get Panediene Extra OTC which is 500 mg paracetamol & 15 mg codeine. It's just not touching this migraine. I have a Drs appt tomorrow so will ask for Panedeine Forte 500mg paracetamol & 30mg codeine. Is aspirin any better for migraine? Is there anything else that helps. I am taking Motilium 10 for the nausea.

3 soluble aspirin in a glass of full sugar coke. It was recommended by the London migraine clinic and works really well. Obviously you will have to wait until your next dose of ibuprofen would be due.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/11/2014 13:37

Sorry just seen you've not taken ibuprofen, so you could take it now.

Do they prescribe Triptans in Australia? They are the best for migraines.

Cocodomal? Migraleve? Imigran?

Kittykat7 · 24/11/2014 16:57

Thanks I don't get migraines that often so not sure about Tryptans. I know it's because I haven't slept well the past few weeks. I always get one if I'm tired. I'm seeing the Dr today so will ask for stronger painkillers. I'm going to ask for a week of sleeping tablets as I keep waking up after 2 hrs then can't get back to sleep. Eventually when I do I wake up again about 4.30am. I've just woken up now after 2 hrs so the middle of the night here now. I've just lost my job too but my sleeps been messed up for weeks now & I don't know why.
I'll give the aspirin a try. Thanks

I've heard that migraines can upset your stomach and so make it harder to digest solid tablets, so soluble tablets can work better. I do actually find soluble aspirin touches a bad headache for me better than tablets do.

chemenger · 24/11/2014 17:00

I second aspirin and full sugar coke at the first sign, really works for me.

chemenger · 24/11/2014 17:01

Should have said it has to be soluble or at least dispersible.

Kittykat7 · 24/11/2014 17:02

I didn't find Migraleve helped when I was in the UK. I don't know if we can get it here though. I don't get much of an aura so the headache is usually here when I realise it's a migraine. I susoect it's too late to take something like Tryptans once the headache starts.

Coke is definitely part of the solution. In migraine blood vessels in the brain constrict and the caffeine in coke dilates them.

I saw my Dr today & got Panedeine Forte 500mg paracetamol & 30 mg codeine). I also got Maxalon for the nausea. I'm hoping I can try & have a sleep when I get home from school.

Thanks Sleepywombat. I've taken 2 tablets so 60mg of codeine & it hasn't made any difference. Mersyndol that you can get here which you can't get now in the UK called Syndol does nothing for me either. It knocks DH & Mil out but I'm still wide awake & in pain. I don't know why I'm resistant to pain killers.

The only thing that works for mine is Rizatriptan, which by prescroption from the doc.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/11/2014 11:08

Try the aspirin in the coke, it really does work.

I am a severe migraine sufferer, I have Botox on the NHS to reduce the frequency and severity. My specialist told me not to take codeine unless everything else has failed because it can cause migraines and other rebound headaches, as can other opiates. I know if I take 2 Tramadol I will get an awful migraine.

elevenfifteen · 25/11/2014 15:21

Definitely asprin, better than any other pain meds i've tried and i've had migraines for 40 years so tried a lot!
Hope you feel better soon.

Kittykat7 · 26/11/2014 04:28

I feel better today, thanks everyone. There is still a dull pain but not as bad as yesterday. I feel tired but I have loads of housework to do. I've managed to eat something so that has helped.
