Has anyone given their child malaria pills, if so, which ones and any side effects? I'm going to Nigeria with DS - he's 2 & half.

You need to check with your doctor or practice nurse what's currently recommended for Nigeria. Malaria strains vary according to the region and you need to be sure you're taking the right medication. Some start 6 weeks before you go. Nigeria has some particularly nasty strains. Also don't forget a bed net and insect repellent (hope this doesn't sound preachy, I used to live in West Africa & malaria's killed or nearly killed people I know)

I live in Nigeria and we take Malarone tablets. Children over the weight of 11kg can take the paediatric version - the dose is weight-related. The tablets should preferably be taken with food or milk at about the same time each day. They should be started one day before arrival and continued for one week after leaving the malarial area. If you decide to use Malarone Paediatric bring the entire quantity you need as they are unavailable in Nigeria. Hth.
