DS, 18, metatarsal fracture & shoe dilemma

DS, 18, has a 4th metatarsal foot fracture - bike accident. Has been told to wear the hard shoe the hospital gave him at all times, or, for school and going out at least, a boot with a hard sole, to keep that toe as supported as possible. DS absolutely won't wear the hard shoe out - he is quite self conscious but, in any case, I can see how it might not be very practical, especially in this weather.

The foot itself, though the accident was a few weeks ago, is still rather swollen so he's looking for something that's not a hiking boot but rather something that he won't swelter in in the classroom, will support the toe but with a soft, flexible upper because of the still swollen foot.

Have tried outdoor shops like Blacks. Shoes all rather stiff. Any thoughts?
Anyone with knowledge of this condition and recovery time? Consultant hasn't ruled out surgery but hopefully it won't come to that. Many thanks.
