Dental Problem: Dd2 has something....

what feels like part of a tooth, sticking out of the front part of her gum, there is a adult tooth there, but this is very small and she says it really hurts. It's hard to describe exactly where it is, it is where your gum meets the bottom of the tooth. What could it be, has anyone any ideas, I'm ringing the dentist now for an appointment, don't know when she'll be seen though .

Has anyone any ideas please?

how old is your child? and is her baby tooth still there?

Is it a hard white lump sticking out of the gum? DD1 had this & it was an abscess underneath the tooth.

My dd2 is 9 years old and her baby tooth came out when she was 7, her adult tooth came through straight away.

It's isn't a lump, it is very sharp and you can't see it, but I can feel it with my finger. I've an appointment for her in the morning. I'm wondering if she's bitten something and it has broke off and stuck into her gum.

i would still go along and get it looked at the dentist will give you a xray to see but if it was a abcess im sure your child would no about it as it would be painfull. how old is she or he?coz when your teeth start coming through it starts of with a lump under the gum.

Sounds as though it could ba a bit of the baby tooth that was left behind and is now working its way to the surface. Hard to say for certain without looking at it though.

vvvvvvv - she is 9 years old and is complaining that it's really sore, I've given her ibuprofen and that seems to have helped. I am taking her to the dentist in the morning, so I'll keep you up to take with the findings .

If it is sharp and not a lump, it isn't anabcess. In additon to the ibuprofen try rubbing some bonjela (or other teething gel) on the area and see if that offers any relief.

I don't see how it can be a new tooth coming through, because the sharp piece of something, is stuck into the gum, below her adult tooth (if you put your tongue into the space inside your bottom lip, it is there. I'll take her to the walk-in centre tonight, rather than wait for the morning appointment.

Ds1 had a tiny bit of baby tooth left which was stuck in his gum - the dentist gave it a while to make it's way out but the gum started to grow over it so he pulled it out. Could be that?

Hi, just an update. We took dds2 to the walk-in dentist last night. The dentist thought that it was a piece of bone (no chance), then changed his mind and said it could be part of a milk tooth that had broken off and had worked its way to the surface. He put gel on it to numb it, but it obviously didn't work because my dd2 was kicking and screaming . So he tried to inject some anesthetic, but because the first lot of gel hadn't worked, dd2 was already so upset and scared. She started to slur her words, so the dentist thought that enough anesthetic had been given, but it hadn't . She was hysterical . So, I've decided to cancel her own dentist's appointment today to give this piece of tooth the chance just to fall out on its own. Poor dd2 has been through enough of an ordeal, so there was no way I was going to force her into going today. I'll keep you up to date on what happens. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.
