Thyroid scan-is ultrasound enough?

Hello everyone
It is increasingly likely I have hashimotos as I have slightly raised tpo antibodies. However, I have a distinctly tender thyroid and feel like I have a lump in my throat and a slightly quavery voice. Can a goitre be tender like this? I'm going to ask my gp for a scan-would an ultrasound be enough to see if my thyroid is swollen? I'm starting to panic about thyroid cancer, even though I know it is rare and (usually) eminently treatable. Thank you-will update after gp on Tuesday!
