Hi ,

myy dd has a bad cold at at night she cannot stop coughing, i think where her nose is so runny. We have tried txylix, calpol, vix, olbas oil, raising the bed, water with vick in it, and her inhaler and none of it is working.

Ive read lots of threads on here about it and it seemd quite common. The doctor says theres no infection, so cant give anything. Does anyone know of any alternative/homeopathic remedies I could try. I dont really know m,uch about alternatives, so any advise would be great. Its horris to see her like this.

TIA

NOt remotely alternative, but the one thing that helps my dd when she is like this (or me, for that matter) is Medised. Because it dries up secretions. Benelyn kids nighttime cough medicine (sorry, cant' remember right name) works on the same principle, without the paracetamol: they both have an antihistamine in them.

I have a night cough at the moment, and they're horrid - that much worse hearing it in your LO. Hope she's better soon!

Ours used to suffer terribly with bad coughs, DD used to cough for hours on end and it was really distressing for her and for us,we too tried everything.

I have been giving my children vitamins every day since last autumn and my daughter was not ill ONCE last year and that is no lie, no colds,no tummy bugs, nothing I am going to see how she and DS go on this year as I have kept them taking the vits. Its been the best thing ever for them.

Good old fashioned remedy costs under £3 :
put Friars Balsam from pharmacy (1 teaspoon) in an old bowl (it will stain) and pour hot water into it to make steam. PUt a towel over the head and breathe in the vapours. Don't let them spill it or get burnt by touching the mixture, putting the bowl on the table or floor helps! Do this for up to 15 mins then put her over your knees (I know this sounds weird!!) and pummel the back with your hands(chopping motion) all the way from the neck to around the waistline. Do this for a while, she may moan but don't do it very hard. The Friars BAlsam loosens the phlegm and the pummeling helps to release it. Make her stop and cough every few minutes and the best thing is to make her spit out what comes out the lungs onto a tissue. This should help to clear her chest so she can sleep better. Raising the bed, are you lifting the top or the bottom of the bed, lifting the top stops the phlegm running into the chest and making more coughing, raising the bottom is sometimes better as it makes them cough more so they get the phlegm out and get better quicker. lol

Pour the old mixture down the steel kitchen sink and get rid of the residue, it stains and is very oily. You can also use as an antiseptic ointment.

I second Elibean's suggestion. When they have this nasty cough with the really runny nose, Medised is brilliant because it contains something that helps stop their nose pouring and they sleep better because of it.
