Endoscopy tomorrow arghh! Sedation or not? Can't decide which is worse!

Endoscopy tomorrow, feeling pretty anxious about the whole thing (understatement) but need to find out what's going on! So, do I have sedation and risk feeling scared and out of control or just the throat spray and feeling terrified and gagging!

Please advise if you have had this procedure!!

It isn't as bad as you imagine, honest. I've had both sedation and without and I prefered the sedation. I woke up with no memory of it happening.

However, apparently I reacted badly to the sedation and was lashing out and kicking Blush. They don't sedate me anymore!

Germgirl · 20/10/2014 11:19

Have the sedation. I had an endoscopy without sedation (they wouldn't sedate me as it took too long & they were running late!) it was pretty horrible. I'm very laid back about most medical matters & don't tend to make a lot of fuss but it was nasty. If you have the option of sedation, definitely go for it.
Good luck, hope you get on ok.

KissMyFatArse · 20/10/2014 11:21

I've had just the throat spray and then another few with spray and sedation.

Sedation is Defo the way to go. It's not pleasant without it.

Valsoldknickers · 20/10/2014 11:31

I had it done with sedation, lovely, dreamy feeling and I didn't remember a thing.Grin

Had a colleague who got it done without, he wouldn't recommend it.

Good luck!

Thanks Ladies! Feeling a bit better about the whole thing now, think I'll opt for the sedation then :-))

I've had it done . Had throat spray - tastes bitter etc ,avoid if you can - and sedation combined .
The sedation is fine ,you don't feel out of control .

Definitely ,definitely go for sedation . And remember they do it all the time and it's not in their interests that you are uncomfortable oe react . Makes their job harder . So they are well motivated to make it as easy as poss for you .

MiddletonPink · 20/10/2014 12:31

Yep go for sedation.

Over before you know it.

Good luck.

gobbin · 21/10/2014 07:05

I've had it with just the throat spray and, whilst it wasn't the worst procedure I've had I would def opt for sedation if I have to have another. Good luck!

BigPawsBrown · 21/10/2014 08:40

Don't bother with sedation. That turns it into a massive procedure with needles in the back of your hand etc. it's literally over in less than a minute without, and it's no worse than vomiting (which I hate, so I do get your nerves). I had two, and I am an anxious type, so I totally know where you're coming from but I had sedation with neither which proves it's not awful.

gingeroots · 21/10/2014 09:28

You do have a cannula in the back of your hand ,but I wouldn't call it a massive procedure . More like an injection .

I would still definitely recommend sedation .

JubJubBirds · 21/10/2014 09:37

Sedation is a lovely feeling IME. Yes you'll have a cannula but that really doesn't take long to do.

KissMyFatArse · 21/10/2014 21:45

How'd it go?

lucy1964 · 23/10/2014 17:49

can any one tell me if a Dr can send you for an endoscopy or do you need to be referred by a specialist? was being seen by a gastro specialist in relation to upper right abdo pain but he has just scanned my liver said thats fine and discharged me with no other tests. Is the NHS rationed nowdays to examine one body part only, lol otherwise i could cry!

tiggy2610 · 23/10/2014 17:57

How did it go peachcake? I've had two without sedation and didn't think it was that bad Confused would do it again without if I needed another.

Hope it went well and you got some answers Smile

KissMyFatArse · 23/10/2014 21:26

Lucy u bit balky need to be referred to someone in that area, if the gastro doc didn't find anything they're are lots of other tests. Did u get your bloods checked and your lft's?

The lots of other scans you can have. I've had pain there for 4 yrs and lost count of the tests so you can Defo request more investigations but best get your bloods done.

lucy1964 · 24/10/2014 17:42

Hi sorry to hijack the post - yes all bloods done with lft and gt/gamma i think this is what it is called and all clear. mri with contrast of liver - slight fatty liver which he says is no worse than anyone else three small inconsequentional lesions possibly caused by pill which are benign and in his opinon do not cause pain. end of . something is causing it though. does endoscopy show things an mri and ultrasound would not show. thank you

Hamandcheesesarnie2 · 25/10/2014 14:38

I opted for no sedation and I found it just the worst experience. In fact just reading this I have a lump in my throat remembering it all. Like trying to swallow that tube again.

I am overdue my 2nd and am having sedation no matter what anyone says. The gagging was horrible.

gingeroots · 25/10/2014 17:53

Lucy - yes I think endoscopy would give different pic to that given by an MRI and ultrasound .But it would be looking at your oesphagus and stomach and stuff ( technical term for for top bit of intestines ) . Guess MRI and ultrasound covers wider area .

Hope they get to the bottom of it for you .
