tickling cough, hardly any sleep for 4 nights, any tips?

It's only a cold and cough, I know, but the cough is, driving me nuts. Very sore with a cough that tickles, at, the back of the throat, leading to violent coughing fits, that make me retch. No phlegm to speak of, just dry and irritating. Particularly bad at night, I end up propped up against pillows on the sofa getting very little sleep. Ache, from coughing. Have tried vicks on soles of feet, lozenges...anyone got any tips?

What works for me is slowly sucking a square of very dark chocolate. It coats the throat sufficiently for me to get to sleep. I can't remember where I read it, but it works better than anything else I've tried.

Get some Benylin Original for dry coughs, and have slightly more than you're supposed to. (Make sure you get the Original not the non-drowsy version). It makes you a bit dopey and also suppresses the cough reflex so you have more of a chance to sleep.

Honey and glycerine syrup.

Chop an onion and put it in your room. It will stop your cough.

I also find that a spoonful of honey works.

Good luck - it's so annoying!

Boil up some fresh ginger in a pot of water for a good 15mins then add some honey to sweeten to taste very good for colds coughs and sore throats. Works a treat but drink plenty until u feel better again.

I always put loads of Vicks right up the inside of my neck and make sure window is open

Get some pholcodine, it's the daddy of cough meds.

Have you tried coconut oil? I'm just getting over a cough (the kind that catches and sends you into a breathtaking fit, sounds similar to yours)

I found slowly sucking a teaspoon of coconut oil really helped to coat the throat for a long time allowing me to sleep :)
Hope you get over it soon Flowers

Spoon of honey. Works a treat!

Great tips, thank you - I think I will try them all tonight! So tired and irritable it's not true, fed up with coughing. A whole weekend of rugby matches for the DC probably hasn't helped. Thanks for the replies.

Another vote for pholcodine. A cough suppressant is what you need.
