Ds2 5wks on Sunday. Multicystic dysplastic kidney was picked up on 20wk scan everything else appeared ok. Was scanned again at 32wks again everything else fine apart from mass of cysts where left kidney should be. Ds made a quick entrance on 27/08/06 beautiful of course, and appears healthy in every way. Had scan last wk, waiting for appt with consultant, just wondered what others experience of this was, he is on antibiotics at mo incase of uti, just interested to talk to others who have experienced this, sorry bit new to this posting biz hope I find someone to chat to.

My DS1(now 7) was born with this. It was picked up at my 20 week scan also, & I was told that he would lead a totally normal life. (Which he does!)
When DS was born, he was put straight onto antibiotics, just incase of infection. He was scanned regually from 8 weeks up until he was 4 years old, when they could no longer see any trace of the cystic kidney.
He also had a cystiagram (sp?) at 5 months old, where they checked there was no reflux.
He is now a healthy 7 year old with one big healthy kidney!

Glad I spotted this thread, as until today I had never heard of anyone else having a multicystic kidney, other than my own DS!

Thank you Pinkchampagne!! How reassuring to read about your DS, you like to believe all the professionals but nice to hear from someone who really knows!! I hope we go the same way as you guys, at the scan this week they thought the cystic kidney had shrunk loads already. And his right one has overgrown to compensate, is'nt mother nature amazing!!! Weighed at clinic today and has put on 2lb already so I don't think there is much wrong with him!!
Funny how something that sounded so dreadful at first hopefully will turn out to not really be that big a deal at all. Thanks again to you and your beautiful DS from me and my beautiful DS

Hi there, I have a cystic kidney! It is a minor problem for me, (it is still there, but the kidney is described as 'spongy').

It does function as a kidney but the problem I have is that it is very susceptible to hormonal and chemical changes and so when I was pregnant I suffered very badly with kidney stones.

My urologist told me I can survive on 1/4 of one kidney, so one cystic kidney should be OK! I also suffer from recurrent UTIs (have done as a baby and also as a teenager and then sinc eI had children) and am am on low dose antibiotics for this.

Notice everyone on this thread has a ds! But if there is anyone with a dd - please bear what has happened to me in mind as I have been ill for 5 years until recently due to preg complications caused by my spngy kidney.

Pinkchampagne · 29/09/2006 21:56

Apparantly it is more common in boys & there are probably loads of people wandering around with one kidney, who will never know, as scans were not around when their mothers were expecting.

Pinkchampagne · 29/09/2006 22:02

My Ds's cystic kidney has completely shrivelled up now (apparantly this is what normally happens, but they will operate if any of it remains), & like your DS, my DS has an extra large good kidney to componsate.
I remember crying with fear after being told about his kidney at my 20 wk scan, but after seeing a peadiatrition I felt very reasurred.
Now the scans have stopped & he is no longer seeing a pead, I often forget that he only has the one kidney, as it does not affect his life at all!
If you ever want to CAT me & chat, feel free.

DD (now 13 months) was diagnosied with MDK (Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney) on 20 week scan. Had lots of regular ultrasound scans,a cystogram to check for reflux and a DMSA scan - all OK. Most recent scan at 12 months showed MDK hasn't shrunk but hasn't grown with dd and normal kidney good size and OK. Going to see consultant shortly to discuss maybe getting MDK removed to prevent any complications later.

Can they tell the difference between MCKD and PKD in utero? We just got the news last week and it's one of the two and we're going mad with grief.
