.......you follow instructions - I forgot and ended up with my gorgeous little boy!!!!!

LIZS · 28/09/2006 21:15

Could be ineffective. I'm on the same ab and the leaflet doesn't specify it but as diorrhea and vomiting can be a side effect I guess that could cause Pill issues.

Blondilocks · 28/09/2006 21:16

I took that & they said that it was likely to make the pill non-effective.

juicychops · 28/09/2006 21:23

i looked it up on the internet but couldn't find much about it. I was taking it in a strong dose but i was in bed throwing up for 2 days straight so had to stop. was put on much lower dose which i handled just about but we never used any extra precautions as i just genuinely forgot about it. We had sex about 10 times too. now worried sick about being pregnant!

er .... in that case ... go test !

juicychops · 28/09/2006 21:31

finished taking the antibiotics yesterday and just finished my period when i started them so would i have to wait a couple more weeks to do a test?

With all antibiotics there is a risk of diarrhoea which could interfere with the effectiveness of the pill so it is safer to use extra protection whrn taking any antibiotic. The main piece of advice to anyone who is prescribed metronidazole is NEVER NEVER drink alcohol whilst taking these antibiotics. They react with alcohol and will make you so ill that you think you are going to expire athe the very least you could do a fairly good impression of the child in the Exorsist with the severity of vomiting. The other reason for taking care is that doctors are very unwilling to prescribe this drug to pregnant women at all especially in the first trimester as it crosses the placental barrier and has been shown to have potentially cancer causing properties and foetal defects so if you were to become accidently pregnant whilst on this drug it could be dangerous. Hope that helps

LIZS · 28/09/2006 21:35

how long a course of ab's ? Yes I'd think you have a few weeks to wait to test conclusively. But even if you just threw up , regardless of ab's, the Pill would be less effective and potentially throw your cycle out.

juicychops · 28/09/2006 21:36

thanks mm i never drink when i take antibiotics but i rarely drink anyway. But i wish i had thought about the protection part! think il give it a week or 2 and do a test. or if i can wait, il wait till im due on again

The course was 1 week and the doc said one week after too. I remember him telling me, i just didn't think about it as seriously as i should of and so i forgot. The thought of bein pregnant again scares me to death!!

Sorry don't want to cause any stress but thought the info was important and you should know. Try not to worry.

kittywits · 28/09/2006 22:10

My first preg was caused by not being told that antibiotics can make the pill ineffective. I was only taking amoxicilin at the time. metronidazole is pretty strong stuff.... I would be aware that there is a possibility that the pill might have failed.
