Asthma and oral steroids

I've been feeling absolutely awful for two weeks now, and the doctor diagnosed a chest infection last Friday. First lot of antibiotics helped, but didn't clear it, and last night I thought my lungs were on fire.

Got a second, longer, dose of a different antibiotic today, but have also been given an oral steroid as my asthma is clearly very bad and my brown and blue inhaler are not keeping it under control.

I've just taken the first dose - does anyone know how long they take to work?

Thanks.

My Dd has had oral steroids a few times, but it's generally in conjunction with lots of other stuff - nebuliser, inhalers, oxygen etc so it's hard to pinpoint the effect of any one thing. Usually it takes a day or two to get back from the really bad levels of asthma and probably a week to recover completely.
The steroids make her a bit loopy though, she's up late at night (she's 4) and will be wide awake till about 11 and she goes a bit manic. But back to normal very quickly once they've stopped.

Thank you. The gp did say to take them first thing, otherwise thry'd keep me awake.

Really want to feel better, but always a bit nervous with new medicine.
