Getting my tonsils out on friday...

what can I expect - i've heard it all from the surgeon, has anyone any experience? i think it has to be a plus, ive had tonsilitis every month this year

Gravity, no idea how it is for adults, but dd2 (aged 4) had hers out this year and she's a different little girl, no more antibiotics, she can eat normally, talk properly etc. Hope you get on okay, don't forget plenty of ice cream/yoghurt/ice lollies for afterwards! (and expect a sore throat worse than the tonsilitis when you first wake up!)

I had mice out when I was 12 (long time ago) as I had constant tonsilitis and abscesses. It made a HUGE difference to my overall health, I went from being run down and constant colds etc to having loads of energy. My Dad said the sparkle came back.
I was technically an 'adult' for the operation - had very sore throat for 2-3 days and was off school for 2 weeks - but as this was 1983 I am sure that all the adveice has changed. After the op the best thing for the pain was sucking an icecube in a piece of gauze - it was heaven!!

harrisey, i got a silly question why is the ice in gauze? becaus eif it helps i am up for all suggestions babe x

Just an ice cube in a piece of gauze dressing which they shoudl have in the ward. Stopped the ice cube from slipping down your throat but lets the nice cold water seep down. In the first few days it was lovely!

Hi, hope all goes well on Friday. I had mine out when I was 18, I used to get tonsilitis all the time and it was miserable.

The op was fine, had a bad throat straight afterwards but was given strong painkillers at the hospital. From what I remember I think I felt better quite quickly and it was definitely worth it. Since I had it done I havent been ill anywhere near as much and never feel as bad as I did with the tonsilitis.

I had mine out last year Gravity & I'm very, very old (37).
I have been in better health over the last 12 months than I can remember for a very, very long time.
Post op is painful but they do give you strong painkillers. You will feel pretty rubbish for about 2 weeks afterwards, so make sure you will be well looked after & that you are not expected to carry on as normal.

got my tonsils out yesterday. not too bad to tell the truth. only, i keep losing my sense of taste after taking my painkillers. and slightly bitter taste in my mouth. is this the norm?

Not sure if that is normal or not, but thanks for this thread. I was due to have mine out this Monday at 7am, but went to the hospital this morning and i have another infection (what a shock - not!) so they've cancelled it again.

Can i ask Gravity, was your throat a real mess with the tonsilitis? Mine is a range of colours from white to pink, to red and dark burgundy. It's been like this pretty much for 2 years.

So glad you are not in pain and sound quite cheery!
