Zoladex and then full hysterectomy.

Hi everyone.

I have suffered with endometriosis for most of my adult life and after trying all options, my consultant has recommended a full hysterectomy. He suggested that I try zoladex for 3 months to see if the pain stops and if it does then the next step is to have hysterectomy.

I am 40 next month and have 2 beautiful children so feel this may be the best way forward.

Had my first implant today and taking Estelle solo with is as have the mirena for progesterone.

Still very nervous as it is such a big step but I can't carry on with the way things are. I am in pain from ovulation to period and am barely in work.

Has anyone any success stories for endometriosis and full hysterectomy? My consultant thinks that as I has no pain at all when pregnant that it is my ovaries that are causing the problems.

I am 41 and had my second injection of zoladex today with a view to have total hysterectomy and take away everything else too.
i notice you wrote this a while back.
how many injections did you have in total before your hysterectomy?
im on HRT too. X

This was me 22 years ago. I had pid, endo, fibroids, cysts and a burst ovary. Basically you name it my inside collected it like a library. Took zoladex injections for 18 months along with Estelle patches and a monthly depo injection. After the 18 months of hell I had a full radical hysterectomy and was up and about feeling like a new woman after 48 hours.
Took hrt for roughly 2 years afterwards then stopped due to not being able to access it or a GP. Never looked back.

I’ve read you can only be on zoladex for 6 months, which is why I thought I would ask.
jyst trying to work out how long I will wait roughly until the hysterectomy- I’m sure there is a waiting list x

Hey there, haven't had a hysterectomy but I have Endo and adenomyosis. As part of IVF treatment I also had long periods of time on Zoladex and prostap to try to get things under control. I used to be a helpline volunteer for Endo uk and went with Zoladex first as a lot of ladies seemed to get along with that better than prostap. But for me I struggled on it so tried prostap next and I got along with that much better. Just thought I would post incase your interested in other options similar to Zoladex. Prostap came in 1 or 3 month injections xx

You are right - that’s what all the leaflets and advice said, even back then. But the consultant over rules that. Back then you didn’t outright question them, especially when you were desperately hanging on for a hysterectomy. But yes, I was in it for 18 months solid. Also depo is supposed to be administered 6 monthly - I had that monthly on top. It was a desperate attempt to stop my continual bleeding. - which of course was never going to work due to having a burst ovary. …….

I have endo and mine is a success story on long-term Synarel (nasal spray version of similar drug to Zoladex) - been on it since I was 44 (11 years). Together with surgery that finally worked on the third go, it has given me my life back. I was under a private U.K. consultant when I started it and now abroad. No HRT except oestrogen cream to prevent dry vagina. So in theory, under a private gynae, you could just stay on the Zoladex till you're ready for the hysterectomy if that's longer than 3 months, or try riding it out till you're menopausal.

I'll be discussing stopping it soon, after I'm well past the average age for menopause. It's pretty scary after being stable for so long. A hysterectomy has always been an option but there is no guarantee it will work for me. Synarel worked much more globally than surgery, so it's possible I have microscopic endo everywhere, which might not be eliminated by a hysterectomy. I also have pretty bad scar tissue behind my cervix that can only be removed with a hysterectomy (thanks to the super-long wait for diagnosis and effective surgery).
