MIL has severe osteoporosis - has spinal fractures she just has to live with, and has just broken a rib bending over slightly. How can we help her?

She just seems to be disintegrating and all the doctors have done is hand her pain killers. Unfortunately she tries not to take them because they bung her up, and she doesn't want to be in pain and constipated too. She has been on tablets and infusions for years which just didn't work for reasons unknown, so now she is just horribly fragile. She breaks bones most months. Can anything at all be done to help her now things are so bad?

Anyone with experience of osteoporosis?

Have they investigated why treatments aren't working? Does she have an underlying condition that's causing the osteoporosis? She obviously needs more than just painkillers thrown at her, so keep going back to the dr and try to get some answers. Is she having lots of falls - I take it she is if she's breaking bones frequently. Ask if there is a falls service in your region they can refer her to
