Ugh, I am constipated AGAIN.

It's actually only been a couple of times this year and I was getting pretty smug that is been regular recently. Then went on holiday and was v aware of making sure all was well, not getting dehydrated, exercising etc, but I think I must have eaten too much or something as I haven't pooed since.

So I'm estimating it's been a week since I did, have taken max strength senokot every night since Thursday and two suppositories today and will try and go to the docs tomorrow.

I don't know what I'm doing diet wise though, or if that will do anything in any case. Should I be eating high or low fibre at this point?

Today I erred on the high fibre side, ryvitas, fruit and veg, dried apricots. Did some exercise this morning. Drunk a lot of fennel tea today and yesterday. Sitting in the bath now with a 2l bottle of water. I don't have much of an appetite of course. Should I just drink and not eat?

And what should I do long term? This seems to happen to me more than it does my DH for example, and he eats way worse than me. I've just bought some All Bran but then read I should avoid wheat in general as it might be the reason. There is so much conflicting advice!!

I guess it's a case of finding what suits you best but I find Movicol is the one that works the best for me.

I find a bottle of freezing cold cheap sparkling water (cheaper = bigger bubbles) gets me going every time. Oh, and a fag even though I don't smoke...fags have a v strong laxative effect on me.
The combo works like magic but usually the water is enough

You have my total sympathy! I have suffered for as long as I can remember and nothing 'natural' works.. I eat tons of veg, drink lots of water, do sports classes.. nada. I just don't get any urge to go :(

I have to use a combo of suppositories (glycerine) or mini enemas plus a stimulant. I also have diverticula and when it flares up my insides just seem to swell and nothing comes thro. Tis horrible

I do find Movicol one of the best for keeping it soft and moving as much as it can..but god it tastes vile!

Hope you go soon!

Well people, I am sooooo relieved to report that a day of drinking fluids, walking/running around the house, suppositories, prunes, 1 dose lactulose, a tin of baked beans and half an enema did the job for me!

So of course I can't pinpoint what helped for next time :-/ but I am feeling sooooo much better and like the worst is over thank god!!!!

Am definitely resolving to be super strict with my diet so this doesn't happen again :( an am glad that the enema was nowhere near as unpleasant as I thought!!

Thanks for all the suggestions haha :)

Am now scared of getting pregnant though as don't want to be constipated for 9 months, and childbirth must be utterly horrific if today is anything to go by!

Pleased to hear you are feeling better

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 03/09/2014 00:00

LOL..I have four children and frankly, bad constipation is worse that giving birth! (plus I always have the runs when I go into labour.. usually a massive relief after being bunged up for months!)

Glad the combo has worked. I'm off to my gP next week to ask for a permanent repeat for Movicol...

Pleased to hear you're better

I'm so allergic to wheat that when I get clogged up I eat a couple of weetabix and it fixes all problems for days!

Failing that orange juice is another good laxative
