Hello,

am new here, son is 5 and have just been told by his teacher that he could not hear sounds on a tape machine the other day and she's concerned about his hearing!! He passed his hearing test in reception, has never had ear probs before and has only ever had 2 ear infections when on holiday, caused by the swimming pool water. I've always thought that he's had bat like hearing and his reception teacher never noticed a problem. Saying this before Summer we did notice a problem with his hearing when he had a bad cold and took him to docs who said his cold was causing a lot of congestion in ears and not to worry, then on hols this year he got an ear ingfection and had antibiotic drops. Could it be left over from this or does it sound like he has glue ear??? all help, advice appreciated, thanks.

Most likely to be glue ear if history of ear infection. Should be seen by specialist though - they miss out on so much at school if there is a hearing problem. Hope you get him sorted out soon.

I agree, it really sounds like glue ear. With any luck, as he's not had it before and he's 5 already, it'll clear up on its own. You can get something called Otovent, which is a balloon with a special attachment - the child blows up the balloon with their nose, this can really help clear glue ear.

There's some info on glue ear on the NDCS website. It can reduce hearing by as much as 30-40 dB, a lot. Luckily, it clears up and any bad effects are transitory.

my son suffers from glue ear alot and has recently had grommets as he had it for over 3 years! cant spell it but our doctor recently put him onto EPHEDRINE?? nose drops that go trough all the tubes and clear the glue ear abit apparently.they've got the same type of thing in as sudafed elixir but are beter.sudafed isnt too bad either as it clears alot of the congestion coming from the nasal passages.good luck.we're now waiting to see if thats what our youngest son has got and our eldest sons grommets arent working so far so we're having lots of fun!
