Is an irregular cycle the sign of anything sinister?

I'm 38 and since the birth of DS almost 2 years ago, I've been on the mini pill. I bleed a lot with no pattern to my cycle - I had a 3 day period last weekend and today have started a heavy flow again. I've mentioned this in passing to my GP in the past who said it was often a side effect of this pill. However my last smear test showed some low level cell changes but no HPV so no further testing or treatment is required. But now I'm wondering if I should go back to the doctor about this, could it be something? Because my cycle is all over the place, it's impossible to predict when a doctor could take a smear test again.

I would go back to the doctor, you are at risk of anaemia if your periods are frequent and heavy.

You could take something to stem the bleeding long enough for a new smear test to be taken, don't let them fob you off, there is lots that can be done.

I don't think some GPs realise how debilitating heavy periods are.
