Atypical Mycobacteria

My dd was diagnosed as having this infection in a lymph node in her neck and I wondered whether anyone else has had any experience of this type of infection ?
Apparantly it is very uncommon but has recently seen an increase in cases.
DD had an op on Friday to remove the infection and is doing well but would like to hear of any other cases.

No personal experience but a friend at school had same thing. We're talking over 10 years ago though!

I remember I posted on your August thread before they decided to operate - glad dd is doing well.

Did you ever find out which species it was?

Hi MrsBadger - We have a follow up appoint in a couple of weeks so we'll find out then. The lymph node had broken down so there was lots of dead tissue and I think they have taken a biopsy to determine the exact variant i case she needs AB'S. There is a 15% chance that she will so fingers crossed that won't happen as it'll be long term.
The information about this condition is pretty vague as it's not known where exactly it is picked up from. Apparantly it's an 'environmental' bacteria i.e could be in soil, air-borne, bird poo etc. but no-one can give us a difinitive answer. It's all a mystery really.
I will post again when we know any results of the biopsy.

No fun that the lymph node collapsed - sounds like you and dd are holding up though.

The only reason I wondered about the species is that it can sometimes give you a hint as to where it might have been picked up from, and I was going to have a nose through the literature and previous cases my lab have handled and/or ask a few contacts in the field to see if I could shed any light on it for you.

Oh fab, I had a sneaking suspician you were knowledgeable about this sort of thing. I will try & find out what species it is and let you know. I'd be fascinated to have some idea of where it came from as my dd doesn't do or go anywhere different to all her friends.
The only thing I can think of is that we have a new development being built directly next door to us and although we have a 12-15ft hedge between us & them the amount of dirt, dust and pollution piling into the garden from all the machinery has been horrendous for the past 18 months. We live on the edge of a village with countryside and farm land opposite and the development is being built on an old field which had been there for donkeys years.
I just wondered whether all the earth disturbancing may have unearthed the bacteria or am I way off the mark here ?

Forgot to mention that we have lots of pigeons in the garden as they nest in the big conifer ad oaks trees at the bottom of the garden - consequently we do get alot of bird poo at times.
Somewhere along the line we were told that there coud be a link to avians
