about 6 months ago, my consultant persuaded me to have the mirena coil fitted.

I am due to have it done tomorrow and REALLY REALLY don't want it done, but he has said that he won't do any other treatment until I at least give it a go.

I've been a mess all day, I feel so sick at the thought of having it done.

I am really really dreading it.

Any advice - tips?

I can only wish you luck!

I've never had a coil, never fancied one if I'm honest but lots of people do

LIZS · 17/09/2006 18:05

Try to relax , accept all offers of a muscle relaxant and take some Nurofen for afterwards. It is uncomfortable and not pleasant but not necessarily very painful, kind of like a smear but with the clamp higher up and takes about twice as long. Think of it as like a long dentist's appointment !

southeastastra · 17/09/2006 18:06

i've got the normal coil, the thought of having it put in was much worse than them actually doing it! don't worry it's quick!

Mud · 17/09/2006 18:06

its your body cancel the appoitnment how can a consultatn who I bet is a man force you to have any internal device fitted and why

i would refuse and be very angryu

Radley · 17/09/2006 18:09

Yes, my consultant is a man.

I asked if they would give me anything to help me calm down etc, but they have flatly refused. I'm debating going to the doctors in the morning and seeing if she can give me anything to take.

how long before the appointment would I have to take the nurofen etc?

what otrher treatment do you need?

3littlefrogs · 17/09/2006 18:12

I had a mirena because I was bleeding constantly and heavily due to being perimenopausal. It was uncomfortable for about 2 minutes. I felt a little bit faint / sick for about 5 minutes afterwards, then I was fine. I was a little bit headachy, and had some spotting for the first 3 months, then it all settled down. That was 5 years ago, I haven't had any periods, no worries about accidental pregnancy, and I am no longer anaemic. Was it worth it? YES. Practice your relaxation / breathing. I told the consultant that he should get a supply of entonox in the room and he said that was a good idea, and he would suggest it. Don't know if he did or not though. nowhere near as bad as giving birth, (or having a filling!)Good Luck.

Radley · 17/09/2006 18:14

I want a hysterectomy, but he has flatly refused.

I have exceptionally heavy periods and can't stand for the pain, i often bleed for 3 week have a few days off and then start again.

DH and I can't have any more children together as we have been warned the baby could die as our bloods are incompatible. The consultant knows all this, but seems to ignore everything that I've said or asked for.

A hysterectomy is a big op. and takes 3 months at least to recover from. I can understand a consultant wanting you to try a safer, effective treatment first.

Radley · 17/09/2006 18:20

Don't get me wrong, I understand what your saying, but, if it takes the mirena about 3 months to settle down, then I would be recovered from the op, iywkim.

Also, if the mirena doesn't work, then that's 3 months wasted.

3littlefrogs · 17/09/2006 18:26

When I say "settle down" I meant for the occasional headache and slight spotting to disappear. (As opposed to being unable to lift anything heavier than a cup of tea for 12 weeks) Honestly, I have nursed people after hysterectomy, and it is a big op. If there really is no alternative then OK, but I really would consider the mirena first. I do understand, and I am not dismissing your fear. I am an absolute basket case if I have to go to the dentist.

Mud · 17/09/2006 18:28

how old are you and how many childrne to you have?

Radley · 17/09/2006 18:31

I'm 33 and I've got 2 children. We cannot have anymore together.

Radley

I used to sell a surgical device for heavy periods called Thermochoice. This consists of a catheter inserted via vagina into uterous and a baloon is inflated with water and heated to a certain degree temp and "burns" the layer of the uterus which prevents heavy periods, most women have it done under general anaesthetic and it takes only 15 mins approx, you can have it under local ,but if you are a wimp like me dont bother!! if you look it up on the internet you will get the info, its made by johnson and johnson and has been used thousands of times across the uk and world. It can only be used if you have no plans for any more kids.
This is the first line treatment before a hysterectomy which is a huge operation, and does not involve any hormones which mirena does have. Please please please do NOT undergo any treatment you do not want to have. If you want any more info just ask x

oht eh coil is great

( finbar had tia maria)

bubblerock · 17/09/2006 19:32

Have you had depo? I found it stopped my periods and the only problem was not being able to conceive quickly - not a problem in your case. I've got the implant now and it's great. Good luck tomorrow if you go.

spagbol · 17/09/2006 20:03

I've got a coil and I genuinely didn't feel a single thing when he put it in. Nothing at all, and I hadn't taken anything. Was surprised and delighted.

lucykate · 17/09/2006 20:10

i've had 2 coils, most recent is mirena fitted just over a year ago. consultant got me to lie on my side with my knees pulled up, i didn't even feel him do anything and it was in. i asked why he got me to lie like that and he said that its the easiest position to do it and it also hurts less done like that. not had any problems with it but it has taken longer than 3 months for it to settle down. the periods have gradually got lighter and lighter so now i only get a bit of spotting every now and again. good luck tomorrow but i'm sure it will be fine.

mcmum · 17/09/2006 21:08

hi i had mirena fitted in my lunch break and went back to work !! im biggest wuss going no where near as bad as you think, take paracetamol 1 hour before due for fitting just like a smear going to dentist far worse please dont worry not that bad ! you will be on here tomorrow wondering why you made such a fuss good luck xx

Radley · 18/09/2006 11:33

Not long now, appointment at 2.10, still not sure if I'm going to go yet. I've done nothing but eat chocolate all morning and I'm now shaking and feeling sick with nerves.

I am dreading is so much and can't get past the feeling that I've been pressured into it.
