Mirena pros and cons?

I've heard that you can have a Mirena coil fitted at the 6w checkup, but is it a good idea?

I've taken the mini-pill with no problems whatsoever (except that the side-effects for the first month or so were exactly the same as early pregnancy symptoms - very confusing! ), but OTOH I have had PND in the past.

Also, what's this someone has mentioned on another thread about nearly fainting with the pain of 'clamping the cervix' when her coil was inserted?

I didn't have bad pain when it was fitted around 11 weeks postnatally but was given a muscle relaxant. Not saying it was exactly comfortable either though. You are still fairly stretched from the birth so less traumatic I think than later on.

I had one fitted at the 6 week check, that was fine. A bit painful at first but then it was great, no af!!

What about the conncection between Mirena and depression?

nothing is clear cut - I think it very much depends on person to person

as I said on the other thread, one of my friends who had horrible mood swings and a tendency to depression absolutely loves the mirena and feels better on it. But it doesn't suit everyone and I imagine, if you have had depression problems with other forms of contraception, then it's probably worth discussing that fully with the GP before you decide to go ahead.

No, that's just it, I didn't have depression when I was on the mini-pill after my second child, but I had had PND a couple of years previously, after my first child was born. What I was wondering was would using the Mirena so soon after giving birth make me more prone to getting PND again?
