ANOTHER Mirena thread, Having it fitted on Monday and DREADING it

After LOTS of appts etc due to heavy bleeding (25 days out of 30) and agonising pains (which consultant said is bowels not period pains) I have been persuaded to have the mirena coil fitted next Monday, I am absolutely DREADING it, I'm nearly crying typing this as I am dreading it so much. I had a colcoscopy a few months back and was told it wouldn't hurt, but it was agony.

My consultant said in round about terms that if I didn't try the mirena first then he wouldn't be willing to try anything else for the bleeding/pains etc.
I've read on other threads that people suffer from weight gain, cramps and mood swings, I already suffer mood swings and I'm on 100mg lustral as it is, has anyone got any advice etc?

are you worried about the actual fitting of it or the coil itself?

re the fitting - there was a sharp pain when it went it but that lasted about a second or so. Then I was a bit crampy for the rest of that day I think. You can take a nurofen afterwards - I think they advise you to do that.

In terms of the side effects - I don't think you can really predict how it will affect you (unless you have had specific problems with the identical hormonal element that is in the coil).

I have had friends who have had dreadful PMT and mood swings and the mirena has been absolutely brilliant for them. Otoh, it didn't suit me at all.

Perhaps see it in terms of a time limit - you'll try it for 3-6 months and then see how you feel?

Hiya, I had Mirena coil fitted 5 weeks ago. Also had colposcopy a few years ago. In my experience, the colposcopy was far, far worse.

Try not to worry.

My experience of side effects has been a lot of bleeding and a little cramping. My moods have actually got better!!

Everyone reacts differently. Foxincocks is right - give yourself a few months to see how it works out. You'll never know otherwise.
