Has anyone used mefenamic acid for heavy periods?

After 2 hideous periods, I was prescribed mefenamic acid to make the bleeding lighter - it wasn't for pain relief as they hadn't really been painful.

I have had 2 periods since and take the mefenamic acid 3 times a day when it starts and both times, my period has been very light and much shorter (3-4 days) which is obviously great

Is this how it should work? And where does the blood go???

Anyone any experience of this?

I have it sitting in my medicine cabinet.

I took it on one occasion and although my periods lightened it took a few days to work (so I still had the nasty superflow for around two days at the start).

Then my damned period lasted for nine days instead of the usual six or seven. Not exactly what I had hoped for :(

Will try it again this month but hope to get sorted with the coil. The doc doesn't want me to use these tablets for too long.

I used to have it. Agree it did make the period last longer (so that is part of the answer to where the blood goes, the other part is that, as an anti inflammatory, I think it does reduce the total amount of fluid slightly too) but it helped a bit. I stopped needing the MA when I went on the mirena coil which damped everything right down much much better (phew)

It doesn't make it lighter, it makes the blood thicker so it seems as though there's less of it.

You should go back to your GP and ask for an ultrasound. There's usually a reason why they turn heavy so they should find out what's causing it.

I used to have 21 day periods. I'm now on the pill and bleed off and on for a few days, never more than an hour at a time (result!). Magnesium and zinc supplements can help too.

Nope, definitely significantly lighter and shorter and not thicker.

Have had an ultrasound - just need to contact the doctor for the results.

Assume there is no harm in taking them? Am only taking them for a couple of days which is enough to work.

Mine said to take them for no longer than 3 days. It's great that they are working I hope your ultrasound was OK.
