Why is this happening to my operation scar?

This is a bit gross, sorry!

About 14 weeks ago i had a laparoscopic operation to remove most of my bowel. This was my second op, first one about 4 years ago. I have lots of little scars all over my tummy, and one larger one where a c-section scar would be. After my first operation, the scar opened up in various places. It would sometimes become very painful and swolen and spew out puss, but mostly it was just about 3 holes with granulation around them.

After my second op, they basically took all of that away and made the most wonderful neat little scar where it had previously been a total mess.

Two days after the op, i got a high fever and that area became swollen and red again. A scan revealed i had a 'collection' under the scar and a raging infection, so the decision was made to cut about an inch on the left of it back open (without anaesthetic, but thats another story!) and let it drain and then pack it and let it heal from the inside out, like you would an abscess. When they opened it up, A LOT of brown liquid drained out.

Well, after 14 weeks of having it packed and dressed, it's almost healed. It's just a tiny hole on the left hand side which seems to be taking ages to close up.

Then tonight i looked at it only to discover that a tiny hole on the right hand side has opened up and a small amount of bloody puss was leaking out. I've cleaned it and re-dressed it, but i don't see my surgeon again for another two months, so i have no idea what it is or why it's happening.

I also have a small bump over the scar that is incredibly painful when touched. Two weeks ago, my surgeon told me he thought it was an undissolved stitch.

Can anyone tell me why this has happened, or if theres anything i should be doing? I feel totally lost!

Thanks. The surgeon didn't seem to think it was an issue. I'm surprised i haven't had another scan to check it's all gone as I was on 3 courses of antibiotics as the damn infection wouldn't go away and it's still a bit weepy.

Yes see GP and get a scan
You may have a small haematoma or a collection of pus, which will always attempt to break through at the weakest point which may be why it's opened up again

It's no use keep giving you antibiotics, if it's MRSA you will need different treatment
